The opportunity we have available
We have a full-time opportunity at the APS4 level to join the Airport Building Control section on a ongoing basis.
The Airports Branch oversees and provides government policy and regulatory advice on matters relating to 21 operational federal leased airports across Australia. The Branch undertakes effective and efficient regulation of federal leased airports to ensure the operations of airports, as nationally significant infrastructure, remain in the public interest.
The Airport Building Control Section is responsible for the administration of building and construction activities at federal leased airports in line with the Airports Act 1996 and the Airport (Building Control) Regulations 1996, including management of a network of external Airport Building Controllers (ABCs) around Australia.
Officers in the section exercise regulatory functions under the Airports Acts 1996, the Airports (Building Control) Regulations 1996, monitor the application of the Act and ensure compliance. The Airport Building Control section coordinates the national network of contracted ABCs and assists them in undertaking their duties by being the point of contact within the department.
What will you do?
The Airport Building Control Coordinator typically is the primary point of contact for the ABC Helpdesk and engages directly with the ABCs to problem solve and troubleshoot any regulatory issues as well as monitoring the system administration of the online system (Airport Building Control Online – ABCO) which all building activity applications and approvals are processed.
We seek candidates with demonstrated ability in project management, compliance/assurance, and interpreting legislation who have strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills to support the regulatory functions of the section. Candidates will have the opportunity to engage with people across the department, other Government agencies, and externally with Airport Lessee Companies (ALCs) and other stakeholders while fulfilling their regulatory functions.
As an Airport Building Control Coordinator, you can expect to:
- Support the regulatory oversight of, and advise on, building certification requirements, procedures and compliance at federal leased airports.
- Apply critical and strategic thinking in the review of legislation, regulations, data and stakeholder engagement to inform policy development and decisions.
- Oversight and manage the ABC onboarding and Statutory Appointment process.
- Ensure that Airport Building Control suppliers are compliant with any contractual, regulatory, or legislative obligations.
- Coordinate and chair network-wide teleconferences that provide the department an opportunity to directly liaise with the ABC network.
- Support the administration of various legislation, including (but not limited to): Airports Act 1996, Airports (Building Control) Regulations 1996, Airports Regulations 2024, and Airports (Environmental Protection) Regulations 1997.
