Position Summary
An Archaeologist(s) technician will be duty stationed on Guam to provide on-site technical support and assistance to the Joint Region Marianas (JRM) Cultural Resources Manager (CRM) and actions related to the Programmatic Agreement between the Commander, Joint Region Marianas and the Guam State Historic Preservation Officer, Regarding Military Training and Testing on and within the Surrounding Waters of the Island of Guam , including research and assessment of potential impacts to cultural resources by military training and testing within the JRM Area of Responsibility (AOR). The Archaeologist(s) will assist full time staff with quarterly impact assessments, literature searches and data gathering, archaeological inventory surveys, archaeological testing, National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) evaluations, data recovery, monitoring, and support annual meetings with stakeholders.

LOCATION : This position is duty stationed at Naval Base Guam, a Department of the Navy installation located on the island of Guam, a self-governing territory of the United States located 3,300 miles west of Hawaii and 1,500 miles east of the Philippines. Joint Region Marianas (JRM) was established in 2009 as the U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force on Guam combined headquarters. The Department of the Navy manages thousands of known terrestrial (and submerged) cultural resources on Guam and within the JRM AOR, including Chamorro (prehistoric), Spanish-era, and World War II era historic properties retaining a high degree of historical integrity.
Essential Job Duties (5 maximum)
- Archaeological Fieldwork and Analysis (60%) : Assit CEMML full time archaeologist and cultural resources specialist with field work related to the 2020 Guam Programmatic Agreement. Assit with archaeological inventory and survey, archaeological testing, NRHP Eligibility evaluations, and data recoveries prior to military training activities, construction projects, and military land management activities (if required). Assist and support relevant literature searches and consult primary/secondary research materials to improve understanding of local prehistory and history in regional context. Travel to CNMI (Tinian, Rota, and Saipan) is expected for this position.
- Curation (20%) : Assist with curation tasks for JRM and other stakeholders on island.
- Cultural Resources Management Administrative tasks (20%) : Assist project director and lead field archaeologist with various administrative tasks related to CR support for JRM.

- Must be in good physical condition, and capable of walking several consecutive miles while carrying gear of up to 35 pounds in a hot tropical environment on uneven terrain.
Supervision: NONE Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in anthropology, archaeology, or closely related field, or currently enrolled in a degree program related to Cultural Resources.
- Good academic standing (GPA 3.0 +)
- Relevant coursework or completed archaeological field school demonstrating understanding with ith all aspects of archaeological research, including research design, mitigation plans, fieldwork, analysis, and report and site form preparation.
- Have a thorough understanding of most standard computer programs.
- Must be legally eligible to work in the United States by proposed start date. CEMML will not provide sponsorship for this position.
- Ability to pass a federal background check in order to obtain a DoD Common Access Card (CAC).
Preferred Qualifications
- Work expertise and knowledge working with U.S. federal historic preservation laws and regulations that govern cultural resource management, including the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), Archeological Resources Protection Act (ARPA) and Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA).
- Previous archeological field experience or field school in the Pacific region, particularly the Mariana Islands, is highly desirable.
- Demonstrated experience with consulting and obtaining data from State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO).
- Working experience with ESRI ArcGIS/ArcGIS Pro software, Arc Catalog software, ESRI ArcGIS Online. Sound GIS dataset management skills.
- Familiarity with agreement documents such as Programmatic Agreements (PA) and/or Memorandum of Agreements (MOA).
- Minimum of three (1) year of post-graduate professional archeological work experience that demonstrates a thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional archeology. Experience should include a combination of professional knowledge and experience working with applicable federal (e.g. Section 106 and 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act) and state regulations.
- Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date.
