Position Summary

Looking for a meaningful summer job where you can work with kids, gain teaching experience, and make a real impact?

The Assistant Camp Counselor supports our Humane Education summer camps, helping lead engaging, hands-on programs for youth that include interactive lessons, games, and animal experiences.

This role is more than just supervision—you’ll help create an environment where kids build confidence, learn compassion, and connect with animals in powerful ways.

This position is ideal for individuals interested in teaching, education, child development, social work, or animal welfare, and looking to gain real, hands-on experience in a supportive environment.

Schedule

This is a seasonal position running from late May through August 15, 2026.

Camp sessions typically run Monday through Wednesday, with varying hours depending on the week:

  • 8:15 AM – 5:45 PM
  • 8:45 AM – 4:45 PM
  • Schedule may vary slightly based on program needs.

What You’ll Do

  • Help supervise and engage groups of up to 20 campers
  • Support hands-on lessons about animals, empathy, and responsible pet care
  • Assist with games, activities, and daily camp flow
  • Help facilitate safe and positive interactions between campers and shelter animals
  • Support classroom management and help keep activities running smoothly
  • Guide and mentor Junior Camp Counselors (teen volunteers)
  • Ensure a safe environment where youth supervision standards are always met
  • Provide support so the Camp Director can take breaks while maintaining adult coverage

Bonus Opportunity:
Interested in teaching? You may have the chance to lead activities or teach short lessons with guidance and support from the Camp Director.

Job Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Experience working with children (camps, classrooms, childcare, tutoring, babysitting, or volunteer work) is preferred but not required.
  • You must be 18 years or older.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Ability to engage and positively manage groups of children
  • Patience, flexibility, and a sense of humor
  • Comfort working around animals
  • Ability to stay organized and follow safety procedures

Working Conditions
