Assistant Retail Manager

About the Role:
We are seeking a reliable and proactive Assistant Retail Manager to support the Retail Manager in the daily operations of our dairy & liquor shop in Palmerston North. The store offers a range of groceries, chilled drinks, chips, smokes, pies, and confectionery. This role is hands-on and customer-facing, assisting with staff supervision, stock management, and ensuring smooth day-to-day operations while delivering excellent customer service.

Key Responsibilities:

• Assist the Retail Manager in overseeing daily store operations
• Support stock control, product range management, pricing, and replenishment
• Assist with product purchasing and coordinating with suppliers
• Help monitor daily sales, cash handling, and financial transactions
• Supervise staff on shift, including training, task delegation, and basic rostering support
• Ensure compliance with the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012
• Maintain high standards of store cleanliness, presentation, and health & safety
• Provide friendly, knowledgeable customer service, including product advice
• Step in to manage the store in the Retail Manager’s absence
• Assist with local promotion and advertising initiatives

Reports to: Retail Manager

Skills & Experience:

• NZQF Diploma or equivalent experience (minimum 2 years as an assistant retail manager or a similar role)
• Manager’s Certificate (Alcohol) preferred or willingness to obtain
• Strong leadership and communication skills
• Customer-focused with solid problem-solving abilities
• Familiarity with local food safety requirements and tobacco retail compliance preferred

Minimum guaranteed weekly hours: 35

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $30.00 – $35.00 per hour
