Unit/Department Summary:
In partnership with the Director, the Associate Director will join a vibrant and growing interdisciplinary program, with faculty representation from across campus, 125 undergraduate students,130 masters students and 30 Ph.D. students with a range of interests. The Environmental Science Program has served the state of Idaho for the past 30 years by supporting the Universitys land-grant mission and educating students to be well informed environmental stewards. Our graduates understand the human, social/cultural and natural dimensions of environmental science necessary for sustainably managing natural resources and the environment in our highly dynamic world. The program takes an integrative holistic approach to environmental science by providing coursework in the biological, physical, and social sciences, and humanities, combined with research experiences that push the frontiers of environmental knowledge. It is an exciting time to step into a leadership role in ENVS. Our growing student enrollment, flexible, innovative curriculum, and hands-on faculty, make the program well-poised to evolve in new directions. The Associate Director will play an important part in shaping the future of the program.

The Associate Director will play an important part in shaping the future of the program.
Specifically, and in partnership with the Director, the Associate Director will be responsible for:
  • Coordinating with core and affiliate faculty across campus to grow membership and strengthen the program identity and university wide commitment
  • Assisting the director in ongoing program management, including strategic planning and implementation of initiatives based on program assessment
  • Organizing an anniversary celebration in 2024-5 (including reconnecting with alumni, documenting history, etc.)
  • Lead recruiting and retention efforts
  • Teach one course in ENVS per year that reflects the interdisciplinary nature of the program
  • Summer contracts will be negotiated annually with the Dean


Please note that this is an administrative position in addition to your current faculty position. Your base faculty position description/salary will not change.

Contingency Description:
This administrative appointment or the administrative portion of the faculty appointment is temporary. Employee acknowledges and agrees that in the event there is no longer a need for the administrative assignment, as determined by University in its sole discretion, University may change this Agreement and remove the administrative salary and/or course release during the contract year and employee may return to their faculty appointment, upon 60 days written notice.

Minimum Education/Degree Required:
Listed degree qualification is required at time of hire.
Required Qualifications:
  • PhD in any field related to Environmental Science (the Environmental Science program is interdisciplinary)
  • Current faculty member or instructor of University of Idaho of any rank or tenure status
  • Established track record in interdisciplinary activities
  • Based on Moscow campus

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with program administration
  • Experience with interdisciplinary research proposals and/or grant budget management
