Description of Work Unit
Colorado State University University Advancement Engagement’s Marketing and Communications team. Who We Are Located in the beautiful town of Fort Collins, Colorado, CSU is a premier land-grant university with world-class programs in education, outreach, and research.

University Advancement Engagement provides comprehensive and purposeful opportunities that support the division’s efforts to increase and amplify alumni engagement, develop a culture of philanthropy, inspire prospective and current alumni donors, and deepen the relationship between alumni and donors to CSU. Grounded in the mission and core values of University Advancement, UA Engagement incorporates the principles of excellence, purpose, gratitude, collaboration, and innovation into every aspect of our work. The UA Marketing and Communications team collaborates with central Advancement and campus partners to develop, execute, and manage alumni- and donor-centric multi-channel storytelling and promotion strategies that inspire, engage, solicit, and retain audiences while elevating the donor and alumni experience.

Position Summary
Reporting to the Managing Director of Marketing and Communications, the Associate Director of Content will collaborate with members of the Marketing and Communications, UA Engagement, Alumni Association, and University Advancement teams to develop high-impact, multi-channel (print, web, social, podcast, video) communications to reach a diverse array of audiences in support of the Division of University Advancement and Colorado State University mission. With special focus on signature alumni and donor publications, the Associate Director of Content will serve as the central editorial contact and writer for AlumLine, Around the Oval, and Gratitude, and collaborate with team members to develop, manage, and share editorial calendars and project plans with campus partners. Guided by annual work plans, this position will write, edit, and proofread strategic content across all UA communications platforms and serve as a resource in developing new ideas to engage alumni and donor audiences. Strong verbal and written communications are essential as this position will write clear and compelling content on behalf of students, donors, faculty, staff, senior leadership.

Required Job Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, marketing, public relations, or related field from an accredited university by the date of hire
  • Minimum of 4 years’ or more writing, editing, and proofreading high-quality publications with significant visibility
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience supervising full-time professional staff and leading a team in the development and execution of complex content strategies
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines in a fast, dynamic environment
  • Demonstrates active engagement with and supports the University’s mission, vision and values.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license, the ability to obtain a driver’s license, or access to a licensed driver by the employment start date

Preferred Job Qualifications
  • Demonstrated ability to write and edit compelling stories for high-quality publications and large, diverse audiences
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with demonstrated excellence in writing, editing, proofreading, and key tenets of journalism, including AP style
  • Demonstrated ability to motivate and work effectively in a highly collaborative, team-oriented environment
  • Demonstrated abilities to coordinate and manage multiple projects in a highly organized and effective manner and meet deadlines
  • Demonstrates an affinity for learning new technology
  • Demonstrated experience using social media and website analytics to improve content strategies
  • Demonstrated expertise in working for higher education or nonprofit fundraising initiatives
  • Master’s degree in communications, marketing, public relations, or related field

Essential Duties

Duty/Responsibility
  • Serve as the lead strategist for developing alumni- and donor-centric content for Advancement digital and print communications channels including, but not limited to, websites, magazines, newsletters, alumni and donor profiles, video scripts, impact reports, fundraising proposals, senior leadership scripts, etc.
  • This person will collaborate with UA teams, including the Alumni Association, Donor Relations and Stewardship, Events, and Annual Giving, and serve as a key participant in ongoing content development and editorial planning meetings for AlumLine (reaches appx. 140,000 alumni), Around the Oval (reaches appx.7,000 Alumni Assoc. members), and Gratitude (reaches appx. 45,000 donors) and will regularly share content and editorial plans with the division and campus partners.
  • This position will also research, write, and edit strategic and engaging communications for large-scale fundraising campaigns and ongoing Advancement communications priorities.
  • Travel locally to conduct interviews with donors and others.
  • Strategize and implement comprehensive written communications pieces for the Division to advance its mission and goals in alignment with University branding/messaging efforts.

  • Serve as a University-wide resource and content development expert for alumni, fundraising, and donor relations strategies.
  • Actively participate in University Advancement Engagement and Advancement Division meetings, trainings, and events that supports Division-wide priorities and initiatives.
