Description



The City of West Allis is seeking a knowledgeable, detail-oriented Commercial Construction Inspector to join our Code Enforcement team. In this role, you will help ensure the safety, integrity, and compliance of residential, commercial, and industrial construction throughout the city. The Commercial Construction Inspector is responsible for reviewing submitted plans and specifications, issuing permits, conducting inspections at various phases of construction, and enforcing municipal and state building codes. Code enforcement duties include issuing violation notices, documenting findings, and performing necessary follow-up to ensure corrective action.
This position plays a key role in maintaining high building standards and supporting safe development within the City of West Allis. West Allis residents receive an additional 5% on top of the hourly pay range.

Examples of Duties

  • Perform inspections, write and review permits, and issue correction orders or correspondence for new construction, remodeling, demolition and occupancy in the City to ensure compliance with issued permits, approved plans, municipal ordinances, state codes, adopted national codes and standards, and state statues relating to construction.

  • Monitor and respond to phone calls, voicemail and email. Assist walk-in customers.

  • Investigate complaints and referrals by inspection of public and private properties for compliance with building and zoning codes and with regards to building and property maintenance, and land or building use.

  • Obtain and maintain inspection certifications and code knowledge through examination, continuing education, training, training, mentoring, and subscriptions to websites and code services.

  • Review construction plans for compliance with codes and ordinances as an official delegated agent of the State of Wisconsin.


Qualifications



Required: High School diploma or GED
Preferred: Associate’s degree in Administrative Professional, Construction, Engineering, Architecture, Planning, or a related field

Required Licenses & Certifications

  • Valid Wisconsin Driver’s License
  • UDC Construction Inspector Certification
  • Commercial Building Inspector Certification

Experience

  • 2–3 years of recent experience in construction, inspection, architecture, drafting, or related building/construction trades
  • Demonstrated ability to enter data and use department-required software
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook (email, calendar, tasks)
