The team is also responsible for the operation of the existing central DSS system before its replacement by the new DSS system.

You will also interface with the team in charge of the subdetector safety systems and the group in charge of the definition of the DSS architecture.

This position offers an excellent opportunity for a young professional to gain hands-on experience in applied electronics projects, contributing to large-scale industrial infrastructures in a cutting-edge technological environment.

Your responsibilities:

  • Support the various activities associated to the construction and testing of the new CMS DSS.
  • Connect and configure the electronic cards and crates.
  • Take part in the manufacturing and installation of the electronic crates for the safety systems.
  • Follow up the installation of the cables for the signals exchanged between the central DSS and the subdetector safety systems and the other technical services, at Point 5 and in the CMS laboratories at CERN.
  • Take part to DSS testing and commissioning activities.
  • Support the DSS expert for programming the alarm action matrix of the CMS detector.
  • Collate the data, prepare the reports, and upload the documentation in the database,
  • Follow up and present the progress of the works done by the DSS team to CMS Safety and Technical Coordination teams.

Your profile:

  • Knowledge of industrial communication protocols (PROFINET, OPC UA, Modbus, PROFIBUS) for the interfaces between DSS and other control systems.
  • Knowledge and experience in electricity.
  • Knowledge and practical experience of sensor readout chains and signal wiring design.
  • Basic experience with cable assembly, connectorisation, and EMC practices.
  • Basic experience with electrical CAD tools (e.g. SEE Electrical, EPLAN, Autocad Electrical) for preparing and updating electrical schematics and cable lists.

Skills:

Knowledge in the following areas will be considered as a plus:

  • Basic experience with Siemens PLC Simatic Step7 programming.
  • Electronic design.
  • Familiarity with WinCC OA or similar SCADA systems, for the communication between safety and control systems.
  • Familiarity with CATIA or any mechanical CAD tools, for cable integration follow-up, to visualise rack layouts and cable routing during integration.
  • Spoken and written English or French, with a commitment to learn the other language.

Eligibility criteria:

  • You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
  • By the application deadline, you have a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in Electronics engineering (or a related field) and your highest educational qualification is a general secondary education diploma.
  • You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.

About us

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.

Diversity has been an integral part of CERN's mission since its foundation and is an established value of the Organization. Employing a diverse workforce is central to our success.
