Definition
The Office of Violence Prevention (OVP) strives to make Columbus, Ohio the safest big city in the country. In cohesion with the city’s vision, OVP promotes a comprehensive strategy that coordinates the efforts between violence prevention initiatives through program assessment and community impact measurement.
The OVP Community Engagement Coordinator serves as a representative of the Executive Director and is the primary point of contact for constituents and community stakeholders seeking a resolution to questions, concerns, and other matters pertaining to anti-violence and violence prevention. This position will ensure constituent concerns are handled in a thoughtful, responsive manner with an overarching goal of providing exceptional customer experience and a positive impression of the City of Columbus, the Office of the Mayor, and the Office of Violence Prevention.
In addition to providing responses to inquiries and managing a record of them, the Community Engagement Coordinator may also work with the Communications Coordinator to develop proactive communication strategies intended to educate and inform Columbus residents about anti-violence and violence prevention initiatives. The Community Engagement Coordinator may also directly engage constituents, and community stakeholders through community gatherings, and may attend meetings and events with the Executive Director or as otherwise as assigned. Performs related duties as required.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
Three years of working in the violence reduction field. Fluency in a language other than English, preferably Spanish or an Afro-Asiatic language.
Candidate has a bachelor’s degree, preferably in Political Science, Communications, Social Science, or a related field, and a minimum of three years of experience working in the community in the violence reduction, criminal justice, or adjacent field. Is adept at understanding the social, developmental, economic, cultural, and legislative issues and trends that affect the City of Columbus and targeted communities. Has the ability to navigate resources to achieve desired outcomes. Has strong oral and written communications skills; reliable and punctual; motivated; interest in city activities and services, and how they impact the community, familiarity with Microsoft Office applications.

Advises staff in the Offices of the Mayor and City Departments about issues and special projects or programs for the community and special interest groups;
Reviews correspondence, confidential or sensitive information, and reports;
Researches community issues and advises on resolutions;
Receives telephone calls and visitors for the Offices of the Mayor; provides recommendations about solutions for inquiries from the general public;
Maintains confidential files, official records of meetings, and other office material for the Offices of the Mayor;
Attends administrative staff meetings and other meetings as directed by the Mayor and/or designee;
May coordinate events and prioritize items for the Mayor’s or immediate supervisor’s schedule;
May arrange meetings and conferences, prepares agendas, and contacts individuals for meetings;
May take minutes of meetings and conferences on behalf of the Offices of the Mayor;
May make travel arrangements for the Mayor and his/her executive staff;
May serve as media liaison for one or more of the Offices of the Mayor;
May serve as the Personal or Scheduling Secretary to the Mayor;
May supervise subordinate support staff in the Offices of the Mayor.
