Facility Attendant

CLASS DESCRIPTION

Class specifications are intended to present a descriptive list of the range of duties performed by employees in the class. Specifications are not intended to reflect all duties performed within the job.


THE POSITION
Under general supervision, opens, closes and oversees the proper use of various City facilities; moves furniture and equipment to set up for classes, activities, and functions; interacts with and provides basic information and assistance to the public; performs light custodial work; and performs related work as required.

This journey-level classification is responsible for independently performing facility operations and customer service duties in support of various City programs. Positions at this level are able to follow established procedures and exercise judgment and initiative in their assigned tasks, receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (DUTIES)

Essential responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Opens, sets up, takes down, and closes facilities for classes, public and private rentals, meetings, and special events; arranges furniture and equipment and ensures set up is in accordance with customer needs and requests.
  • Assists groups using facilities as requested; explains and enforces facility rules.
  • Monitors the proper and safe use of program facilities by the general public and ensures adherence to rules and policies.
  • Makes reservations and registers participants for programs and classes; receives program and reservation fees and requests.
  • Removes trash in and around buildings; helps ensure proper waste sorting and disposal including recycling and organics; performs light cleaning and custodial duties of facility rooms.
  • Cleans and disinfects surfaces, refills soap, hand towels and toilet paper dispensers, clean spills and respond to other situations as they arise.
  • Identifies and reports building maintenance needs to appropriate staff.
  • Provides information about City programs, services, activities, and events to the public.
  • Provides staff support at special events
  • Maintains accurate schedule and records of work performed and materials and equipment used.
  • Transports supplies, equipment and program participants in the course of the work.
  • Performs routine administrative duties such as filing, photocopying, scanning, and answering phone calls and emails, and related functions.

QUALIFICATIONS

Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

Education:

  • Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade.

Experience:

  • Some general clerical or custodial/janitorial experience involving public contact is desirable.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Individuals who are appointment to this position will be required to maintain a current and valid California Driver’s License and satisfactory driving record throughout employment OR demonstrate the ability to travel to various locations in a timely manner as required in the performance of duties. *A current and valid out-of-state license may be used upon hire and a valid California Driver’s License must be obtained within six (6) months of appointment.

Knowledge and abilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Knowledge of:
  • Recreation, leisure, and community programs, services, and activities.
  • Basic safety precautions and procedures related to recreation program area(s) and facilities.
  • Basic facility maintenance techniques and materials.
  • Methods, materials, and equipment used in custodial work.
  • Proper cleaning methods and the safe usage of cleaning materials, disinfectants, custodial tools, and equipment.
  • City and Department cash handling and balancing practices.
  • Basic principles and procedures of record keeping.
  • City and mandated safety rules, regulations, and protocols.
  • Techniques for de-escalation and providing a high level of customer service by effectively assisting with the public, vendors, and City staff.
  • Modern equipment and communication tools used for business functions and program, project, and task coordination.
  • Computers and software programs (e.g., Microsoft software packages) to conduct, compile, and/or generate documentation.

Ability to:

  • Provide courteous assistance to facility patrons.
  • Set up rooms and facilities for classes, public and private rentals, special events, and meetings according to written diagram and/or verbal direction of supervisor.
  • Maintain facilities and equipment in a clean, safe, and secure manner.
  • Use and operate a variety of custodial equipment.
  • Maintain accurate logs, records, and basic written records of work performed.
  • Perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Understand, interpret, and apply all pertinent laws, codes, regulations, policies and procedures, and standards relevant to work performed.
  • Effectively use computer systems, software applications, and modern business equipment to perform a variety of work tasks.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing using the English language.
  • Use tact, initiative, prudence, and independent judgment within general policy, procedural, and legal guidelines.
  • Establish, maintain, and foster positive and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

THE DEPARTMENT
The Recreation Department manages a full range of recreational and special activities for youth, adults and seniors. The department also schedules activities and rentals of buildings, picnic areas, sports fields and tennis courts.

This position is non-benefited.

In accordance with California state law, you are entitled to five (5) paid sick leave days per year. These days are eligible for use following your 90th day of employment with the City.
