About The Humane Choices Foundation
The Humane Choices Foundation is a registered nonprofit organization based in Ontario, Canada, dedicated to protecting and defending the inherent rights of all animals.
Through advocacy, education, and direct action, we promote compassion, respect, and ethical treatment for all living beings.
Our vision is to build a professional, sustainable, and compassionate organization that reflects the values we champion: kindness, empathy, and integrity.
Position Overview
We are looking for a Volunteer HR Manager who understands that behind every mission-driven organization are real people who need to feel supported, welcomed, and valued. This is a foundational role. You will help us build the policies, processes, and culture that allow our volunteers and team members to do their best work. If you are someone who believes people operations and social good belong in the same sentence, this role was written for you.
Recruitment and Onboarding
- Lead volunteer and staff recruitment: writing job postings, coordinating interviews, and communicating with applicants in a warm and professional manner.
- Design and maintain onboarding materials that help new team members feel oriented, welcomed, and ready to contribute from day one.
- Develop role descriptions that accurately reflect what each position involves and what support the person can expect.
- Partner with team leads to ensure onboarding experiences are consistent across departments.
Policy Development and Compliance
- Develop, maintain, and regularly review internal HR policies, including hiring practices, conduct standards, and offboarding procedures.
- Ensure policies reflect Canadian employment law and nonprofit best practices, with particular attention to volunteer agreements and contractor relationships.
- Build an EDI (Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion) policy framework that extends our organization's compassion for all living beings into how we treat one another.
- Document all policies clearly so they are accessible and usable by the whole team, not just HR.
Volunteer Experience and Retention
- Create structures for recognizing volunteer contributions and milestones so people feel genuinely seen.
- Check in proactively with volunteers to understand what is working and where support is needed.
- Develop a feedback and offboarding process that helps us learn and improve over time.
- Be a consistent, approachable presence for anyone on the team navigating a workplace concern or challenge.
Culture and Team Wellbeing
- Champion a team culture that reflects our values: compassionate, honest, inclusive, and grounded.
- Identify and address signs of volunteer burnout, especially given the emotionally demanding nature of animal rights advocacy work.
- Work with leadership to build a psychologically safe environment where people feel comfortable raising concerns.
- Help us become the kind of organization that people are proud to be part of and reluctant to leave.
What We Are Looking For
Required
- Experience in human resources, people operations, or a related field, whether in a paid or volunteer context.
- Working knowledge of Canadian employment standards and volunteer management best practices.
- Strong written communication skills with the ability to draft policies and correspondence that are clear, warm, and professional.
- High emotional intelligence and the ability to handle sensitive conversations with discretion and care.
- Comfort working independently in a remote, volunteer-led environment with limited administrative infrastructure.
- Alignment with the mission and values of the Humane Choices Foundation.
Nice to Have
- Experience in a nonprofit, advocacy, or social purpose organization.
- Familiarity with EDI frameworks and trauma-informed or values-based HR practices.
- Knowledge of PIPEDA and privacy considerations related to personnel records.
- Experience using project management or team communication tools such as Monday.com or Slack.
Why Join Us
This is a chance to do HR work that actually means something. You will not be filing paperwork for a company whose values you have to Google. You will be helping build the human infrastructure of an organization fighting for beings who cannot speak for themselves.
- A volunteer role that carries real responsibility and real recognition.
- The freedom to build HR systems thoughtfully from the ground up rather than inherit outdated ones.
- A flexible, remote arrangement that works around your existing commitments.
- A team that genuinely appreciates the work behind the scenes that makes everything else possible.
- Meaningful portfolio experience in nonprofit HR leadership.
