Position: Justice Cultural Support Worker

Reporting to: Coordinator of Justice Supports

Location: First Light Friendship Centre

Summary

As a member of the Indigenous Housing & Inclusion Team, Justice Cultural Support workers work with individuals who have present or previous justice involvement. The team’s work is steeped in anti-oppressive practice while working with a strong understanding of intergenerational and historical trauma and its effects on Indigenous peoples and communities.

Reporting to the Coordinator of Justice Supports, the Justice Cultural Support Worker is responsible for providing one-on-one and group support to individuals who have/are involved within the justice system. The role will consist of providing a holistic approach to mentoring folks and providing a safe space to share and work on their wellness journey in a positive way.

Employees on this team often become aware of privileged information and personal stories of intergenerational trauma, intimate partner violence, grief, addictions, historical trauma, etc. Therefore, employees on this team must demonstrate a strong sense of self, have the ability to recognize and act appropriately on their own triggers, have a strong self-care plan and the awareness and willingness to seek support if needed. The First Light Friendship Centre has a confidential employee and family assistance program which is available to all staff at no cost.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Provide one-on-one and small group support to participants referred to the justice cultural support worker, with an emphasis on those involved in the justice/corrections system, this primarily involves in-reach support
  • Provide secondary land-based support to participants who want to reconnect to the land for their own traditional wellness journey
  • Coordinate services and advocate on behalf of Individuals to ensure their needs are met by government and community systems
  • Report regularly on progress of client’s support plan and provide recommendations on future justice, housing or cultural support required.
  • Other related duties as assigned, relevant to the functionality of the Indigenous Housing and Inclusion team

Qualifications

Education/Experience

  • Diploma/degree, or acceptable combination of similar education, in Social Work, Child and Youth Care, Community Development, Indigenous Studies, etc.
  • Deep knowledge of Indigenous culture, traditions & practices
  • Minimum 2-3 years’ experience in a similar role providing one-on-one and family support
  • Driver’s License and clear driver’s abstract
  • Clear Record of Conduct and Vulnerable sector check
