Marion County Public Works is seeking an enthusiastic, safety-minded individual to join our Road & Bridge Operations Division.
This Maintenance Worker/Toll Taker position will join our collaborative Wheatland Ferry operations crew and work alongside the ferry operators to secure the ferry, direct traffic, collect tolls and make change. They will also assist with opening and closing procedures, as well as minor maintenance and repairs of the ferries. When not assigned to a ferry shift, this position will join one of our other collaborative operations work groups performing maintenance of roadway features within the Marion County community including bridges/guardrail, pavement/drainage, signs/pavement markings, roadside vegetation, litter control and inclement weather response.
Desired experience includes any combination of cash handling, customer service, and maintenance/construction activities pertaining to buildings, facilities, landscape or equipment.
This position requires 18 years of age or older, possession of a high school diploma (or equivalent), a valid Class-C driver’s license and a demonstrated safe driving record of two years or more.

Typical Duties - Duties include, but are not limited to the following
This position is primarily assigned to the Wheatland Ferry and may have to report to other workgroups with alternative work locations and work schedules.
- Work under supervision of the ferry operator; collect money and make change; assist with openings and closings; and assist with repairs when breakdown occurs.
- Digging ditches; shoveling; installing and maintaining culverts; cutting and chipping brush; litter pick-up / nuisance control removal; clean and maintain shops, grounds, vehicles, and equipment.
- Controls or directs traffic around hazards or crews; sets up, moves, and maintains signs, cones and barricades, portable devices for work or hazard zones; turn high water signs; operates pilot truck.
- Shovel and rake hot mix asphalt or cold mix; apply tack oil; prepare and apply crack sealant.
- Stands for long periods of time; walks long distances; works in inclement weather conditions; performs heavy manual labor; loading/ unloading all types of heavy materials; work with Corrections workers.
- May operate general equipment listed in the Equipment Operators Classification table.
- Adequately communicate and access information via the computer (i.e., effectively uses and responds to e-mails).
- Participates in on-going training and professional development.
- Considered an essential employee; works in inclement weather conditions; aids in storm responses and recovery including ice, snow control, flooding, high water, and wind damage.

May take part in chemical hazard cleanups, according to training given.
Participate in basic incident command training; may participate in drills to maintain proficiency in supporting ECC activities, including carrying out field work in connection with ECC operations; may be assigned clerical/ support, incident liaison, or other duties at any location within or near the county; Emergency Management duties may require working long hours outside normal business hours, weekend/holiday work, and may occur with little or no advance notice; may assist in emergency / field inspections of infrastructure. - Performs other duties as assigned by your supervisor.
Requirements for the Position
- High school diploma, or equivalent; AND
- Any combination of six months experience in controlling or directing traffic, performing semi-skilled road maintenance/construction work, exterior work that includes heavy manual repetitive labor activities, or other closely related areas or activities; OR
- Any satisfactory combination of work, education, training, or experience relevant to the position, as determined by Marion County.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Must possess a current driver's license in the applicant's state of residence and an acceptable driving history. Marion County will obtain a copy of the driving record for all qualified applicants from Driver and Motor Vehicle Services and review the driving record according to the Marion County policy and procedure for Driving on County Business. - The finalist for this position will be required to pass a criminal history background check; however, conviction of a crime may not necessarily disqualify an individual for this position.

- This is assignment is represented by a union.
- This is a full-time regular position, which are eligible for overtime.
- Typical Work Schedule: Friday through Tuesday, 5–8-hour days, with flexibility depending upon the needs of the department and program.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of basic tools use dependent on position assignments: working safely in traffic; recycling programs; and proper cash handling.
Skill in effective oral communication; reading comprehension; basic computer operations; ability to receive and understand technical and safety training; and completing daily reports.
Ability to understand and follow directions; exercise good judgment; perform heavy manual repetitive labor activities for extended periods of time including during adverse weather conditions; stand or walk long distances; operate simple machines and radio equipment; wear proper Personal Protection Equipment (PPE); perform simple math functions; make change; and maintain good working relationships coworkers and the public.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Operates a motor vehicle and maintains an acceptable driving history; stands for long periods of time; sits for up to 1/2 hour; walks about the work area; walks long distances; bends forward; reaches overhead; works in inclement weather conditions; performs heavy manual labor, lifts and carries up to 50 lbs.; pushes and pulls up to 50 lbs.; loads/ unloads all types of heavy materials; climbs ladders and scaffolds; works in and around heat, cold, humidity, uneven areas, wet areas, smoke and dust; works with engine vibrations; possible risk of exposure to blood/body fluids; possible risk of exposure to exhaust fumes. Operates a keyboard; speaks clearly and audibly; uses rapid mental/hand/eye coordination; reads a 12-pt. font; distinguishes shades and colors; sees with depth perception; hears a normal speech level; possible risk of exposure to OSHA Blood/Body Fluids.
PUBLIC SERVICE LOAN FORGIVENESS
Marion County is a qualifying public employer for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program. Through the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program, full-time employees working at the County may qualify for forgiveness of the remaining balance on Direct Student Loans after 120 qualifying monthly payments under a qualifying repayment plan.
