Unser Profil
The Chair of Engineering Geology at RWTH Aachen University has around 35 employees conducting research in the fields of rock mechanics, geomechanics and natural hazards. In addition to the basic equipment, the chair is financed by numerous national and international third-party funded projects. The Chair is involved in the degree courses in Applied Geosciences and Georesource Management.
The candidate will be working within an interdisciplinary team of engineers and modelers within the project “OptiHyd – Optimization of hydraulic borehole testing in low permeable rocks”. The aim of the project is to improve hydraulic testing in deep boreholes for the purpose of nuclear waste repository characterization by establishment of a process focused digital twin of the lifetime of a deep borehole. OptiHyd is lead by senior scientists at Fraunhofer IEG closely cooperating with the chair of Engineering geology and Hydrogeology at RWTH Aachen. Additionally, the selected candidate will get close contact with associated partners at AFRY Group, Solexperts Group and BGE mbH during stages and in field tests.

The following qualifications are required for work on the project:
- A very good university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in Civil Engineering (e.g., Geotechnical Engineering), Hydrogeology, Engineering Geology, Computational Engineering, or a similar program.
- Ability and availability for frequent travels of a few days to a few weeks in Germany and neighboring countries for conducting field work
- Ability and availability for several weeks long trainings at partner companies
- Drivers License B
- Some technical abilities in signal electrics and repair of mechanical equipment are considered an advantage
- Basic knowledge of programming languages (e.g., C++ and Python) and computational modeling techniques (preferably FEM) are considered an advantage.
Ihre Aufgaben
Your tasks in the project will be as follows:
- Plan, conduct and analyse hydraulic tests in low permeability lithologies relevant as host rock formations for nuclear waste repositories
- Build and calibrate numerical models for hydraulic testing that integrate real-world data from field tests (e.g., hydraulic pulse tests, pressure decay tests) in rock formations (shale and granite).
- Analyze and validate model predictions by comparing simulated results with experimental data, and refine the model to improve performance and reliability.
- Publish scientific results, e.g., through presentations at national and international conferences and publications in high-quality journals.
