Speaking Coordinator - Spellers & Allies Advocacy Network

International Association for Spelling as Communication (I-ASC) is excited to be powering up the Spellers & Allies Advocacy Network (S&A) with a Speaking Coordinator position. This paid advocate will join a team of 2 nonspeaking coordinators and 2 speaking coordinators to support the advocacy efforts driven by the core volunteer members of S&A. We are looking for someone with experience working/volunteering in organizations and doing grassroots advocacy or community organizing.

The S&A Speaking Coordinator’s main roles will be administrative, supporting advocacy campaigns and opportunities, and facilitating meetings and goal development. This person will also offer leadership around event planning, advocacy strategy, and the organizational processes of S&A. Finally, the speaking coordinator will support creating a welcoming and neurodiversity-friendly group. This candidate must have some Eastern Time Zone daytime availability.

Essential Skills:

  • Experience working/volunteering for organizations or grassroots advocacy group(s)
  • Experience with facilitation and coordinating meetings and events
  • Participation in advocacy campaigns/lobbying/activism (both within and outside of Spellers & Allies Advocacy Network preferred but not necessary)
  • Exceptional organization and communication skills
  • Strengths in collaborative teamwork, consensus decision making and empowerment of volunteer members
  • Ability to mentor and promote skill development and confidence building in work colleagues and volunteers
  • Ability to take guidance from the consensus decision making process and work collaboratively with other coordinators
  • Knowledge of and experience incorporating a neurodiversity paradigm, accessibility, anti-ableist approaches, equity, intersectionality, and “Nothing About Us Without Us”
  • Technical knowledge of Google Suite and Zoom, strong writing skills, and knowledge of social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, etc.)

Roles and Expectations:

  • Use experience to offer guidance and leadership around advocacy strategy and the organizational processes of S&A
  • Based on ideas generated by volunteer membership, offer consultation to S&A contractor coordinators and the I-ASC executive team in relation to the role of S&A
  • Attend, facilitate, and take minutes for S&A large team, subcommittee, and attend meetings as needed
  • Support campaigns by facilitating meetings and coordinating communications
  • Organize and maintain S&A Google Suite
  • Research and compile stakeholder information in relation to advocacy goals determined by S&A members
  • Disseminate promotional materials to relevant parties
  • Develop public-facing content based on guidance from S&A members (blogs, memes, social media posts)

Pay: $25 USD per hour

Pay Schedule: Monthly

Commitment: 15 hours/month
