Stockroom Attendant

Position Summary

The Stock Selector is responsible for accurately selecting, verifying, packaging, and preparing parts and materials for delivery to production or shipment to customers. This position ensures that all orders are processed efficiently, packaged securely, and meet company and customer quality standards.

The Stock Selector supports warehouse and production operations by maintaining organized inventory, meeting production and efficiency requirements, and following established procedures for material handling and shipping preparation. This role requires attention to detail, accuracy, and commitment to safety and quality in all daily activities. Stockroom hours are from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Essential Functions and Basic Duties

1. Stock Selection and Order Processing

  • Select finished, semi-finished, and purchased parts from bins, racks, and skids for production or shipment.
  • Review and interpret work orders, bills of material, and order information to ensure accuracy of part selection.
  • Verify material codes, quantities, and specifications such as impeller trim sizes, pressure relief kits, and coupling bore sizes.
  • Pull and deliver parts to the packing area or production workstations as required.
  • Utilize data terminals or ERP systems to determine stock locations and update inventory transactions.

2. Packaging and Shipment Preparation

  • Prepare cartons, crates, or containers using appropriate packaging materials such as wrapping paper, foam, plywood, or protective fill.
  • Check parts for accuracy, quality, and condition before packaging.
  • Properly label and identify shipments using stencils, tags, and markings per company or customer requirements.
  • Weigh, label, and package parts using tools such as box staplers, wire banders, tape machines, and heat sealers.
  • Pack and position parts securely to prevent damage during transport and ensure compliance with shipping standards.
  • Handle domestic and government shipments according to special handling or documentation requirements.

3. Inventory and Material Handling

  • Maintain organized stock areas and ensure all materials are stored safely and labeled correctly.
  • Requisition and maintain adequate supplies of packing and shipping materials.
  • Assist with periodic cycle counts and inventory control activities as directed.
  • Operate forklifts, hoists, and hand trucks to transport materials safely throughout the department.
  • Assist with replenishing bins, organizing warehouse space, and maintaining an efficient work environment.

4. Communication and Coordination

  • Coordinate with shipping, receiving, and production personnel to ensure timely completion of orders.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors regarding work progress, shortages, or quality concerns.
  • Assist and support coworkers in meeting department objectives and resolving operational challenges.
  • Attend departmental meetings and participate in continuous improvement initiatives.

5. Safety, Quality, and Performance

  • Follow all safety rules, standard operating procedures, and quality guidelines.
  • Inspect parts for accuracy, defects, and conformance to specifications before delivery or shipment.
  • Operate all material-handling and packaging equipment safely and maintain it in proper working condition.
  • Meet established production and efficiency requirements while maintaining accuracy and quality standards.
  • Report unsafe conditions, faulty equipment, or quality issues immediately to supervision.

6. Additional Responsibilities

  • Maintain work areas in a clean, organized, and safe condition.
  • Participate in cross-training to enhance flexibility and department support.
  • Perform other duties or special projects as assigned by supervision.

Education/Certification

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Forklift certification preferred (or ability to obtain and maintain a Gorman-Rupp forklift license).

Experience

  • Minimum of one year of experience in warehouse, manufacturing, or stockroom operations.
  • Experience in order selection, material handling, or packaging preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of warehouse procedures, material handling, and shipping/receiving operations.
  • Ability to read and interpret work orders, bills of material, and written or verbal instructions.
  • Proficiency in using hand tools, packaging equipment, and ERP or inventory systems.
  • Ability to operate material handling equipment (forklifts, hoists, pallet jacks, etc.) safely and efficiently.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to accuracy in part selection and order fulfillment.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills to coordinate with other departments.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to meet production and efficiency requirements.
  • Physically capable of performing manual material-handling tasks safely and efficiently.
  • Dependable, self-motivated, and adaptable to changing work priorities.

Physical Requirements and Work Conditions

  • Mobility: Frequently required to stand, walk, bend, reach, and climb short ladders throughout the workday.
  • Lifting/Handling: Medium work; exerting up to 50 lbs. occasionally, and/or up to 20 lbs. frequently, and 10 lbs. constantly.
  • Dexterity: Frequent use of hands and arms for handling parts, operating tools, and packaging materials. Requires good hand–eye coordination and fine motor skills.
  • Vision Requirements: Must be able to read labels, documentation, and computer screens; requires close, distance, and color vision and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Hearing/Speaking: Must be able to hear verbal instructions, alarms, and equipment operation in a moderately noisy warehouse environment.
  • Environment: Work performed in a warehouse and manufacturing setting with exposure to noise, dust, temperature fluctuations, and moving equipment. May occasionally be exposed to fumes, odors, and lubricants.
  • Safety: Must follow all company safety procedures, maintain situational awareness, and use required PPE including safety glasses, gloves, and steel-toe footwear.
  • Stamina: Requires sustained physical activity throughout the shift, balancing efficiency, safety, and accuracy.
  • Work Schedule: Standard work hours with flexibility for overtime, weekend, or shift adjustments as required to meet production and shipping deadlines.
