Trauma Education & Residency Program Coordinator
LOCAL 200 MEMBERS ONLY

The Trauma Education & Residency Program Coordinator oversees and coordinates the non-physician aspects of rotating medical students, residents, and trauma and burn fellows. Under general guidance of the Trauma Education Director, the Trauma Education & Residency Program Coordinator works independently to ensure medical students, residents and fellows are properly organized, coordinated, oriented, monitored and evaluated by the physician medical staff. Ensures that all students, residents, and fellows remain in compliance with those requirements set by Cook County Health & Hospitals System (CCHHS) and by all organizations of post-graduate medical education programs. Interacts with education assistants from other departments within the hospital, as well as from other institutions locally, nationally, and internationally. The Trauma Education Program Coordinator is expected to have a visible presence for the rotating residents and students, assisting and maintaining a high level of resident satisfaction for the rotation. Coordinates and administers additional educational activities of the Trauma and Burn Department, including administering or organizing Trauma and Burn Department sponsored courses (e.g. Advanced Surgical Skills for Exposure in Trauma (ASSET), Advanced Pre-Hospital Life Support (PHTLS), Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS), and Advanced Burn Life Support (ABLS)).

Typical Duties
  • Manages the intake process and exiting process for all rotating residents and fellows, including processing of related licensure, credentialing, and creation of appropriate personnel records.
  • Orients new fellows, residents and students prior to starting their rotations.
  • Creates the monthly resident call schedule, coordinating with resident program coordinators from multiple training programs across the city as well as national/international residents.
  • Coordinates the medical student rotation schedule, which includes students from diverse programs both nationally and internationally.
  • Collects, enters, and assigns evaluations to respective trauma staff.
  • Assures that fellow, resident and student physician evaluations are completed in a timely fashion and entered into the appropriate reporting system.
  • Represents the Trauma and Burn service on select departmental and institutional committees and at meetings related to training and educational activities.
  • Coordinates the SICU/Trauma fellow education program.
  • Coordinates the educational courses offered by the department, including ASSET, PHTLS, ABLS, etc. that are targeted toward healthcare personnel at outside institutions, both locally and nationally.
  • Responsible for advertising, registration, and logistics of the educational courses offered by the department of Trauma and Burn (ASSET, ATLS, ABLS, PHTLS, Stop the Bleed, etc.).
  • Assists with the coordination of the Navy – Cook County Corpsmen Trauma Training Program

Performs other duties as assigned


Minimum Qualifications
    • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university
    • Four (4) years of experience in an administrative capacity within medical education or healthcare administration OR Two (2) years of experience as a Residency Program Coordinator within healthcare
    • Two (2) years full-time experience using a database to create and maintain records and extract information to other software
    • Prior experience in program management such as coordinating educational courses, establishing timelines, and/or tracking completion of phases
    • Prior experience managing personnel or training records, i.e. medical students, residents, fellows
    • Prior experience creating reports and working with numbers and data analysis
    • Intermediate skills in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel)


Preferred Qualifications

    • Demonstrated proficiency in New Innovations or Electronic Residency Application Services software
    • Thorough knowledge of Graduate Medical Education administrative practices
    • Knowledge of medical terminology
    • Experience with medical credentialing
    • Prior supervisory experience
