The Utility 1 is responsible for the completion of tasks associated with interments, disinterments and cemetery grounds maintenance operations, using their own judgement and problem-solving skills, but under direct supervision from the Cemeteries Operations Coordinator, Foreman, Equipment Operator 4 and/or Leading Cemetery Groundsperson. The Utility 1 is expected to work cooperatively in a team environment and operate tools, equipment and attachments in a safe and efficient manner, as required to perform cemetery functions. They will provide assistance to, and answer general enquiries from, clients in the cemetery grounds and perform seasonal grass maintenance duties, for example mowing, leveling and seeding.
As the Utility 1 in Cemeteries, you will:
- Operate and maintain equipment and attachments, as required to perform interments and disinterment’s of full body and cremated remains, and all cemetery grounds maintenance tasks.
- Communicate effectively, using tact, understanding, diplomacy, and observing strict confidentiality.
- Actively promote high quality Customer Care and supports a Respectful Workplace Environment.
- Take part in completing janitorial tasks when required.
- Actively participate in a team working environment to achieve given tasks and objectives with general supervision from the Cemeteries Operations Coordinator, Foreman Equipment Operator 4 and/or Leading Cemetery Groundsperson. May be required to act as Cemetery Groundsperson, on a temporary basis.
Your qualifications include:
- Six (6) months experience operating grounds maintenance equipment (eg: weed trimmers, riding mowers, etc.).
- Basic knowledge of cemetery function and operations.
- Basic knowledge of Health and Safety at Work Legislation.
- General knowledge of the operation of and day-to-day adjustment and servicing of riding mowers and weed trimmers.
- Commitment to providing a high-quality customer service.
- Ability to participate in all training courses relevant to maintaining best working practices, and for upgrading to senior positions. Must be willing to provide feedback on attended courses and relevance for other team members to attend.
- Ability to understand, execute and communicate oral and written instructions and procedures.
- Ability to communicate effectively with members of the public and colleagues.
- Ability to use computers and other technical equipment necessary to perform the duties of the position.
Conditions of employment:
- The successful candidate must maintain legal eligibility to work in Canada. If the successful candidate possesses a work permit, it is their responsibility to ensure the permit remains valid.

- Must possess and maintain a valid Class 5 Manitoba Driver’s License. The successful applicant will be required to provide a driver’s notice in force document upon request.
- Must possess a St. John’s Ambulance Emergency First Aid Certificate or equivalent or be willing and able to obtain it within three (3) months of appointment.
- Must be physically capable of performing the duties of the position, including the ability to lift weights in excess of 50lbs and working outdoors in adverse weather conditions.
- The successful applicant(s) will be required to provide CSA approved personal protective safety boots (six (6) inches above the ankle) at their own expense.
