Communication Intern
Principal Function: This Community Relations position supports the communication branch of the Town of Brownsburg. It involves assisting with multimedia development, outreach, and strategic planning to promote community engagement and special events. The role requires proficiency in graphic design and strong writing skills. The Communications Intern works closely with all Town departments, Brownsburg residents and businesses, elected officials, and volunteer and non-profit organizations.
Internship Timeline: September 15 - December 12
Hours: 20 hours per week
MUST BE AVAILABLE TO WORK SPECIAL EVENTS, INCLUDING SOME NIGHTS OR WEEKENDS

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Capture and edit photo and video content, write social and website copy, create email campaigns, curate galleries, and assist with content planning and graphics.
  • Assist in the content ideation and creation for Town of Brownsburg and Brownsburg Parks social channels and websites including program coverage, copywriting, graphics, blogs, and photo galleries.
  • Photograph special events and programs.
  • Design artistic and visual communications, including organizational graphics, digital and print materials, social media graphics, videos, guides, temporary event signage, and flyers to inform and call to action.
  • Edit graphics and photos for use on-site, social, and videos.
  • Curate photo galleries and highlights for programs and events.
  • Shoot social-style video with high-end smartphones or a DSLR camera.
  • Assist in brainstorming and creating content plans.
  • Create and execute marketing plans for fall and winter programs and events.
  • Help with initial planning and content creation for spring programs and events.
  • Work closely on fall community outreach projects and events, including the annual food drive, Project ANGEL toy drive, letters from Santa, Small Business Saturday, and Field of Honor.
  • Perform special projects and other duties as assigned or required.

Qualifications

  • Pursuing a degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing or related field.
  • Knowledge of municipal government structure.
  • Experience in graphic design and photo/video editing.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Proficiency using a DSLR camera.
  • Must have a vehicle for travel during work hours for photo and video shoots or to pick up/drop off promotional materials.
  • Experience using social media platforms in a professional setting, including Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram.
  • Ability to attend events outside of work hours (nights and weekends).

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less), distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more), color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors), peripheral vision (ability to observe an area that can be seen up and down or to the left and right while eyes are fixed on a given point), depth perception (three-dimensional vision, ability to judge distances and spatial relationships), and the ability to adjust focus (ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus).

This job operates primarily in a professional office environment with minimal safety/health hazard potential. However, job duties will require one to operate in the general community with moderate safety/health hazard potential. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.
