Across COO, the support provided by the team involves working with leaders and teams within NZ Manufacturing, Global Supply Chain, Global Engineering & Technology, Food Safety & Quality and supporting business units.

The team has embarked on a significant transformation programme to continue a journey of improvement in health and safety and is working with the business to embed new mindsets and practices including the implementation of Human and Organisational Performance and operational learning approaches.

Mō tēnei tūranga | About the Opportunity
Reporting to the Regional Health & Safety Manager CNI, this 12-month fixed term role provides an excellent opportunity to further develop your health and safety career while supporting a dynamic operational environment. We are seeking a Health, Safety and Wellbeing Business Partner to join our team at the Tirau site, where you will experience variety, meaningful challenges, and the chance to make a real impact while covering a parental leave period.

Our Tirau site produces casein, lactalbumin and lactose slurry for international food and industrial markets, with casein and lactalbumin primarily used in infant formula and sports nutrition. The site has recently upgraded its wastewater treatment plant as part of ongoing efforts to improve discharge quality and environmental performance. Known for its agility in managing variable milk volumes and its capability to treat high strength streams, Tirau remains a vital and flexible asset for the region.

You will play a pivotal role in fostering a strong safety culture across all areas of the operational environment. You will support the implementation of Health, Safety and Wellbeing (HSW) plans, be responsible for monitoring activities and support the continuous improvement of health and safety practices to enable compliance, minimise risks, and promote employee well-being. As the H&S Business Partner, you will build trusted relationships with stakeholders and coach on best practice health and safety.
Key responsibilities include:
  • Partner with stakeholders to identify opportunities for improvement and make recommendations to ensure best practice H&S standards and meet company and site safety objectives.
  • Understand the business environment to anticipate safety issues and associated risks and provide practical solutions.
  • Engage with key stakeholders to execute second‑line assurance processes, ensuring transparent reporting, robust control testing, and alignment with organisational risk standards.
  • Analyse event trending and support the management of incidents and contractors within our Health and Safety Management System.
  • Coach and lead quality learning reviews with shared learnings and corrective actions to enhance systems and processes aimed at enabling successful work.
  • Support sites permit to work improvement and use.
  • Ensure the H&S management systems are up to date and regulatory changes are adhered to.
  • Plan and track HSW strategies across weekly, monthly, and quarterly timelines and present insights.
  • Please note this is a 12-month fixed-term position.

We are seeking a practical, experienced, relationship driven individual with a passion for HSW - someone who excels within a close-knit team of dedicated professionals and demonstrates a strong ability to embrace and navigate challenges.

You will bring strong coaching and influencing skills, enabling leaders and employees to apply best practice health and safety standards. Your ability to build trust, manage expectations, and engage stakeholders with confidence will support effective, practical HSW outcomes across the site.

To make an impact in this role you will have:
  • Proven experience in a health and safety advisory or business partnering role.
  • Preferably hold a relevant health and safety certificate or diploma (NEBOSH, Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety or equivalent).
  • Strong technical health and safety expertise ideally from a manufacturing or high-risk environment.
  • Strong knowledge of relevant legislation and standards including process safety, and hazardous substances risk management
  • Ability to implement adaptive HSW strategies in diverse settings.
  • Ability to instil trust across a diverse workforce and establish meaningful relationships with stakeholders.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment plus being adaptable to change and ambiguity.
  • Analytical mindset to investigate and learn from incidents and trends to develop robust preventive measures.
