Image Analysis Internship Opportunity - Ihb (Basel, 6-12 Months, Earliest Starting Date: February 2026)

At Roche you can show up as yourself, embraced for the unique qualities you bring. Our culture encourages personal expression, open dialogue, and genuine connections, where you are valued, accepted and respected for who you are, allowing you to thrive both personally and professionally. This is how we aim to prevent, stop and cure diseases and ensure everyone has access to healthcare today and for generations to come. Join Roche, where every voice matters.

The Position

The Institute of Human Biology (IHB) is a newly established research center in Basel, Switzerland, dedicated to advancing human biology through the use of human model systems for translational research. Our dynamic and interdisciplinary environment fosters collaboration among biologists, engineers, and data scientists, bridging the gap between academic and pharmaceutical research. Closely associated with Roche’s Pharmaceutical Research and Early Development (pRED), we partner with leading academic institutions both locally and globally to address grand challenges with bold, innovative science.

The Opportunity

This role offers hands-on experience in cutting-edge computational biology, with real impact on organoid research and drug discovery. You’ll be part of an exciting scientific community at the IHB and receive mentorship by experts in computer vision and software engineering. Working in a fast-paced research environment, you will contribute to the advancement of next-generation human model systems and open-source tools used by the broader bioimaging community.

Depending on your background and interests, you will pursue one of two focus areas:

  • Open-Source 3D Viewer Development: Contribute to adapting and extending an open-source 3D viewer to meet IHB’s needs, in close collaboration with the Fractal project, with the goal of making it available to the broader imaging community.

  • Bioimage Analysis: Work directly with IHB scientists on developing state-of-the-art image analysis algorithms, and scaling them to terabytes of 3D imaging data on high-performance computing (HPC) and cloud infrastructure.

Who You are:
  • Master’s degree and/or ongoing PhD studies in computational sciences, computer science, electrical engineering, bioinformatics, or related fields.

  • Proficiency in Python and familiarity with relevant scientific and visualization frameworks, alongside knowledge of modern software engineering tools and methods such as version control (GitHub/GitLab), CI/CD, containerization, and software packaging.

  • Background in designing scalable solutions for high-performance computing or cloud environments is a plus.

  • Proficiency in concepts of Computer Vision and related methods in Deep Learning, with familiarity in data analysis and statistical methods.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, including the ability to explain technical concepts clearly to a non-technical audience.

  • Experience with microscopy or biomedical imaging is of advantage, paired with proactive self-study of methods necessary to advance the assigned project.

  • Independent implementation and validation of image analysis pipelines after defining tasks in collaboration with IHB scientists and mentors, along with thorough documentation of projects and code according to IHB guidelines.

  • Team player with the ability to work independently and diligently translate mentoring feedback into your own work, proactively reporting results and challenges to the project lead.

Technical details:
  • A current CV and a Motivation Letter, where you indicate your preferred start date of the internship.

  • Please note, due to regulations, non-EU/EFTA citizens must provide a certificate from the university stating that an internship is mandatory as part of the application documents, and must be continuously enrolled in their university or PhD program for the whole duration of this internship.
