Renert School is one of Calgary's leading private schools. We run teaching and research labs at our school, most notably a Synthetic Biology (iGEM) lab.
We are looking for a Teaching Assistant and Lab Manager to maintain the laboratory spaces, lead labs with students Grades 10-12, and mark lab submissions. The ideal candidate will have significant experience in laboratory management and instruction work in a post-secondary setting.
We expect the work hours to be 12 - 6 pm daily, 3 - 4 days a week to start. This may expand over time.
Key Responsibilities
Instruction & Student Support
- Design and administer labs to high school students in Biology
- Prepare labs ahead of time and clean up after
- Mark students' lab reports using provided rubrics and provide meaningful feedback
- Help promote safe lab practices and support safety training for students
Lab Management & Operations
- Maintain a clean, organized, and well-stocked environment
- Take initiative in maintaining lab functionality by anticipating needs, cleaning, restocking supplies, and completing tasks without requiring reminders or prompts
- Oversee inventory and ordering of lab supplies and equipment
- Perform preventative and corrective maintenance, calibration, and repairs on equipment
- Review hazards and control risks related to the preparation of the labs
- Label and handle materials in accordance with current approved legislation and WHMIS
- Handle safe storage, disposal of chemical waste, and respond to emergencies (e.g. spills)
- Submit and maintain annual chemical inventories and ensure WHMIS compliance
- Work collaboratively with the science team to ensure proper cleaning, maintenance and functioning of the department spaces
- Collaborate with science staff to support a wide range of activities across divisions
Qualifications:
- B.Sc. in Biological Sciences with strong knowledge of Biology (Chemistry knowledge and/or M.Sc. preferred)
- Minimum of 3 years of lab management and instructional experience
- Strong knowledge of lab safety practices, WHMIS regulations, and chemical handling
- Comfortable with spreadsheets, electronic mail, and learning new technologies
- Strong problem solving, multitasking, and time management skills
- Highly independent and proactive with strong attention to detail
- Strong interpersonal skills, and genuine enthusiasm for working with teens
