Summer Student - Classroom Assistant

Job Purpose

The Classroom Assistant assists Language Program instructors to help newcomer and refugee students in achieving success in their English language learning and integrating in Canadian society.

Responsibilities:

  • Working collaboratively with teachers to support newcomer and refugee student success in identified skill areas
  • Facilitating smaller groups of current students to complete class activities
  • Assisting students to organize their Portfolio Based Language Assessment (PBLA) portfolios
  • Using a variety of teaching methods, resources, and strategies appropriate for some students’ unique learning challenges
  • Providing appropriate reinforcement and constructive feedback to the individual students and their teachers regarding individual progress in the identified areas
  • Assisting with the coordination of cultural events (e.g new student orientations, field trips, special collaborations among classes)
  • Supporting teachers with administrative-related tasks

Qualifications

  • Preference will be given to those students who identify as disabled, Indigenous, black/racialized youth, or 2SLGBTQI+.
  • Education: working towards post-secondary education preferably in Teaching English as a Second/Other Language, Education, Linguistics or a related field
  • Communication: Strong communication skills; effectively listens to and responds to student needs; communicates clearly orally and in writing to meet expressed needs
  • Teamwork: Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with teachers and newcomer and refugee students
  • Technical: Strong computer literacy skills; demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office program

Eligibility:

  • Student in a post secondary, vocational or technical program are eligible
  • Canadian Citizen, permanent resident or a person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act
  • Student is legally entitled to work in Canada

Working conditions

Hours of work are Monday to Friday, 9 am – 3:30 pm (lunch 12 – 12:30) for 8 weeks.

Job Types: Full-time, Fixed term contract
Contract length: 8 weeks

Pay: $18.00 per hour

Expected hours: 35 per week

Schedule:

  • 8 hour shift
  • Day shift

Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree (preferred)

Work Location: In person

Expected start date: 2025-07-07
