Job Description

Your Position: Application Specialist Intern (Mapping and GIS)

Location: Christchurch, NZ

Work Type: Summer Internship: Fixed term 12 weeks, Full time from Nov 2023-Feb 2024

Our Division: Geospatial

Are you ready to join a global technology company that is transforming the way the world works?

What You Will Do

Join us for a 12 week paid internship at our R&D APAC HQ Hub right here in Christchurch. You’ll join 20 other interns for our 2023/2024 cohort, where we’ll create the opportunity for you to socialise, team build and enjoy an off site visit to our test site.

As a Mapping and GIS Intern, you will fulfill the role of an entry-level Applications Specialist. You will assist the team with testing, documentation, and preparation of releases of Mapping and GIS products. In particular, you’ll get to work on testing updates to our “Terraflex” mobile field software, integrating with our office software systems including the cloud-based “MapViewer” software and the “Trimble TerraOffice” desktop add-in for ArcMap.

  • Collect data for receiver characterization. You will be provided with clear instructions on the required data collection method, what applications and settings to use, and what the output data requirements are. Some of these datasets will require long sessions or repeat setups. Assistance with setup will be given where needed. Data will be shared with other engineers for analysis. A report is expected for each dataset that summarizes the method, findings, and links to data.

  • Device compatibility testing. You will verify that a variety of supported Android/iOS/Windows devices work suitably with our field software.

  • Verify application integration. You will be required to test new features in our products. This will include reporting bugs or improvements to the eJIRA dashboard, running zephyr test cases, and verifying/retesting the fixes that are assigned to you. You will also be asked to provide feedback to Product Managers and Engineers on any new features/functionality that you are testing.

  • System testing. You will be required to complete end-to-end testing of the product from a customer perspective. This may involve the setup of a mock customer project (real-world scenario), field day data collection off-site, and finally data collation and analysis back in the office. You will be expected to share your findings.

  • You will be asked to summarize your testing every week during our weekly test team sync-ups and highlight any concerns or major issues you found.

  • Any other duties directed by Management as and when required.

What Skills and Experience You Should Bring

  • Working towards a relevant tertiary qualification in geography, geoscience, surveying, or equivalent.

  • Effective communication skills (verbal and written).

  • A passion and curiosity for user-centric design and attention to detail.

  • Flexible approach to working in a changing environment.

  • Ability to work as part of a collaborative team.

  • Good time management skills.

  • Able to work well under pressure.

  • A willingness to work outdoors when required.
