The Team
The Auditor’s Office Accounting and Operations team works together and independently to achieve the team objectives of providing excellent service to the City Departments, vendors and residents. We are the centralized review, approval and posting point for financial transactions generated by the 50+ Divisions of the City of Columbus.

The Position
The Assistant Auditor I role begins with training on the tasks of approving invoices and encumbrances (purchase orders and budget reservations). The Assistant Auditor I (Accounts Payable Analyst) is trained in the Microsoft D365 Financial Management system and on City of Columbus business processes, policy, procedures, City Charter and City Procurement Code. As knowledge and interests are developed, the position may evolve into performing tasks in additional areas such as auditing of specific funds, receipts, grants, legislation, reconciliations, information requests research, procurement card, process and document development, system testing and troubleshooting and end user business process education and assistance.

To be successful in this role you should have excellent communication skills, the ability to prioritize workload and have a curious nature and learning mindset. A genuine interest in learning and growth and pride in work is essential. Once trained you should be able to work independently on assigned tasks but be capable of working in a team environment where we pull together to cover needs and shift priorities as needed.

Examples of Work
:
  • Review invoices for accuracy and purchasing code and financial rules compliance, approve or reject with guidance on needed corrections and post invoices.
  • Analysis and approval (or rejection/education on errors) of budget reservations, purchase orders and contracts for accuracy, completeness and for fiscal and legislative compliance
  • Assist and educate citywide fiscal staff and vendors with questions about the Accounts Payable business processes
  • Respond to city staff and vendors’ inquiries (payments, invoices, 1099’s)
  • Various accounting, monitoring, review and reconciliation tasks

Preferred Qualifications
:
  • Three years of accounting, bookkeeping, fiscal, compliance or audit experience.
  • Associate’s degree or equivalent post-secondary education with emphasis on government finance, bookkeeping or business administration. Substitution: additional three years related experience may be substituted for the education requirement.
  • Ability to learn, understand and execute written legislative and financial information and instructions
  • Strong PC and Microsoft Office products skills, specifically Outlook, Excel and Word
  • Demonstrate strong verbal, written and listening skills

Preferences for
:
  • Familiarity with government finance and Microsoft D365 Public Sector
  • Bachelor’s degree with emphasis in accounting, public administration, finance or business administration
  • Time management skills – able to plan and execute tasks efficiently and effectively, manage time and multiple priorities and seek help when needed.
  • Analytical problem solving, critical thinking and sound judgement skills
  • Ability to show understanding, friendliness and courtesy to others

Examples of Work

(Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all of the duties that may be performed.)

Audits and processes invoices and encumbrances for payments to vendors from all City departments;

Posts and maintains accounting data and reconciles subsidiary and control accounts; maintains daily records and prepares monthly reports;

Assists City department's payroll staff with payroll/personnel questions and procedures; audits payroll;

Assists in compiling, writing, and editing financial statements and budget proposals;

Confers with personnel from City departments to ensure smooth functioning of newly implemented accounting or fiscal systems or procedures;

Assists in developing procedures and documentation outlining established methods for performing accounting, fiscal, or payroll work;

Conducts or assists in conducting special projects initiated by or coordinated through the City Auditor's Office.
