Background Line Supervisor For Our New Feature Film

Cartoon Saloon, established in 1999 by Paul Young, Tomm Moore, and Nora Twomey, is a world renowned animation studio with five Academy Award® and two Golden Globe® nominations and many award wins including BAFTA® and Emmy®. Located in Kilkenny, Ireland, the studio produces brave and beautiful shorts, feature films, and TV series. Cartoon Saloon is the founder and host of Kilkenny Animated, an annual festival of visual storytelling incorporating exhibitions, talks and performances celebrating the creativity of the animation craft.

Position:

As a BG Final Line Supervisor you will be responsible for:

• Following the animatic, work closely with the director/Art Director to establish visual language in the creation of black & white backgrounds containing the Final Line Artwork,
• Carefully follow the style established in Scene Illustrations and Style Guides
• Create briefs for Final Line Backgrounds based on layouts referencing conceptual artwork and location designs
• To brief each Final Line Artists on their assigned tasks
• To help each Final Line Artists adhere to their assigned quotas
• Guide Final Line Artists at using traditional media (paint, ink, etc)
• To ensure consistency and continuity of all Final Line BG’s
• To work closely with the Director and Art Director (s)
• To work closely with Director, Art Director (s), TD and Production Manager to deliver complete layout breakdown list as required by production
• Ensure quality and style consistency with project
• To deliver technically clearly named files following established protocols
• To attend departmental kick-off meetings, reviews and director approvals as needed.
• To supervise and deliver any additional Final Line BG’s or BG fixes as required by the team.
• To report to the Production Manager and Line Producer as needed, informing them of any possible delays in the production.
• Be involved in recruitment process of BG Final Line Team; reviewing and assessing potential candidates to shortlist for testing and subsequently interview
• Be available on Google chats and by emails during working hours

Requirements:

• The ideal candidate should have at least 3 years experience as Background or Layout Supervisor for theatrically distributed 2D features and/or aired television series.
• Strong artistic skills with an aesthetic for drawing, inking, texture and light
• Excellent problem solving skills
• Ability to meet deadlines as established by production management
• Ability to multitask and prioritise
• Excellent organisational and communication skills
• Strong attention to detail
• Promote a good work ethic and positive atmosphere within the team
• Assist in keeping information related to the project confidential and secure
• Attend and contribute to relevant meetings and trainings as needed
• Knowledge of asset tracking and database software (such as Shotgrid) is a distinct advantage
• Be available on Google Chat and by emails during working hours
