Job Summary
The Direct Support Professional (DSP) plays a vital role in providing assistance and support to individuals with disabilities, ensuring they can lead fulfilling and independent lives. This position involves working closely with clients to help them achieve their personal goals while promoting their dignity and rights. The DSP will engage in various activities that enhance the quality of life for those they support, including assistance with daily living tasks and community integration.
Duties
- Assist clients with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), including personal hygiene, meal preparation, and medication management.
- Provide home community care, ensuring a safe and supportive environment for individuals.
- Advocate for resident rights and promote independence among clients.
- Support individuals with disabilities, including autism, by implementing personalized care plans.
- Engage clients in social and recreational activities to foster community involvement.
- Offer specialized care for individuals with dementia or those in hospice care as needed.
- Maintain accurate documentation of client progress and any changes in condition.
- Ensure compliance with all safety protocols, including CPR training when necessary.
- Prepare meals and assist with cooking as part of daily living support.
Skills
- Experience in home care settings is preferred, particularly with individuals who have disabilities or special needs.
- Knowledge of resident rights and advocacy practices.
- Familiarity with dementia care techniques and strategies.
- Ability to perform CPR and respond effectively in emergency situations.
- Strong communication skills to interact effectively with clients, families, and team members.
- Compassionate approach to working with individuals from diverse backgrounds and abilities.
- Patience and adaptability to meet the varying needs of clients throughout the day.
