Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is the country's largest employer, delivering universal public healthcare to 5 million New Zealanders. We provide essential hospital, specialist, and community health services across 80+ locations from large urban centres to rural towns and remote communities.
Our goal is to improve health outcomes for all New Zealanders by delivering equitable, accessible and innovative care.
About the Role
Our Cancer Psychological and Social Support Services team are currently seeking a suitably qualified Clinical/ Health Psychologist to join us in a fixed term part-time opportunity working 20 hours per week (0.5FTE).
You'll be joining a dedicated team of four social workers, three psychologists and a regional leader based near Christchurch Hospital, delivering service across the Waitaha Canterbury and Te Tai o Poutini West Coast region. Our Canterbury based team is part of an upper South Island regional service, with colleagues in Nelson-Marlborough and Timaru.
As the leading cause of death, cancer directly or indirectly impacts the lives of countless New Zealanders. With increasing global awareness of the importance of professional psychosocial support and a gap in local service provision, the Ministry of Health launched our National support initiative in 2016. The service is now well established with work underway to ensure delivery of quality, equitable service across the country. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to make a significant contribution to shaping and delivering a service that will make a meaningful difference in the lives of many patients and their whānau.
Our team provides support to patients who are under high suspicion of, or in treatment for, recently diagnosed cancer (or a recurrence thereof), and who carry their unfair share of difficulties that could jeopardise their treatment, and/or their (or their family / whānau's) adjustment to the illness.
Our service operates across Monday - Friday within core business hours. The days and hours associated with this position are negotiable, however travel across Canterbury and the West Coast may be required.
In this role, you will be responsible for:
- Assessment and treatment of patients referred to the service;
- Provision of support and advice to members of the wider multidisciplinary team;
- Participation in the ongoing development of the service.
About You
Your skills / qualifications will include:
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- NZ Registration as a Clinical/ Health Psychologist with a current APC is essential
- Previous experience in a hospital setting with cancer patients is preferred but not essential
- As there is some community travel required in this position, a full NZ driver's license is essential
