About the Role:

The LMRe Agriculture & Parametrics team is seeking a motivated Data Science Intern for a 6-month internship focused on innovative parametric insurance solutions, specifically targeting hail risk assessment and mapping. The selected intern will participate in the development and automation of analytical tools for risk analysis and change detection related to hail damage on various assets (cars, roofs, crop fields, solar panels, etc)

Within Liberty Mutual Re, the Agriculture & Parametrics department offers innovative and digitalized insurance solutions to clients worldwide to mitigate climate change. We address the challenges faced by farmers, cooperatives, large corporations, and governments, leveraging cutting-edge technologies such as satellite imagery, IoT and machine learning. The team has been a pioneer in the field of parametric insurance for more than 20 years and consists of actuaries, data-scientists, agronomists, and engineers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the development and assessment of a hail index using statistical and physical approaches.
  • Contribute to the creation of hail risk maps for various geographies and asset classes.
  • Support the development of change detection algorithms to identify property damage using remote sensing, satellite imagery, or other relevant data sources.
  • Collect, clean, and prepare datasets sourced from third parties as well as internal databases.
  • Participate in the construction of user-friendly interfaces and data visualizations to aid risk assessment processes.
  • Collaborate with underwriters and other stakeholders to ensure that technical deliverables meet business requirements.
  • Document methodology, processes, and findings and contribute to internal knowledge sharing within the team.

Skills and Experience

  • Current pursuit or recent completion of a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in a relevant scientific discipline (e.g., Data Science, Statistics, Meteorology, Agronomy, Engineering, Computer Science, etc.).
  • Proficiency in Python and/or R, with demonstrated skills in data preparation, mining, and visualization.
  • Familiarity with, or interest in, deep learning, geospatial analysis, and remote sensing techniques.
  • Experience or keen interest in the fields of agriculture, meteorology, or natural hazards.
  • Experience with dashboarding tools (e.g., Shiny, Dash, Streamlit) considered an advantage.
  • Professional proficiency in English is required; skills in French and/or Spanish are considered a plus.
  • Strong communication skills; ability to work autonomously and as part of a team, demonstrating initiative and a willingness to learn.
