The Opportunity | Te āheinga

Join our Venues & Events team as part of our Eco Engagement & Recovery Crew and play a hands‑on role in helping Council achieve its Zero Waste 2040 vision. These casual positions are ideal for people who care about the environment, enjoy working outdoors and love being part of vibrant community events.

As a member of the crew, you’ll support waste minimisation initiatives across Council venues, reserves, parks and open spaces. Through collaboration, education and practical on-the-ground engagement, you’ll help eventgoers understand how to correctly sort their waste, reduce contamination and maximise diversion from landfill.

You’ll contribute to the effective delivery of event waste plans, promote sustainable behaviours and work alongside contractors, volunteers and Council teams to ensure events run smoothly while upholding our environmental goals and policies.

Key Responsibilities | Ngā haepapa matua

Support Council’s Zero Waste 2040 goals through hands-on waste sorting and clean-up activities at events.
Provide friendly and informative customer service to the public, assisting with waste sorting and answering basic queries.
Set up and pack down waste stations and signage in alignment with Zero Waste event plans.
Participate in litter picking and resource recovery activities alongside contractors, organisers and volunteers.
Maintain cleanliness of venue grounds post-event, including managing bins and removing litter.
Sort waste into correct streams (e.g. recycling, compost, landfill) to maximise landfill diversion.
Collect basic waste data (e.g. bin counts, weights, contamination and behaviour notes) to support reporting and continuous improvement.
Participate in any position related training as required.
Any other duties as determined or required by the business to achieve the effective delivery of the programme.

Essential Skills and Experience | Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako

Basic understanding of waste sorting and handling processes.
Strong customer service and communication skills.
Ability to engage with a diverse range of people.
Reliable means of transport
