The Bureau of Meteorology is transforming to deliver more customer-centric, resilient, and unified national operations. As part of this transformation, the Energy & Resources (E&R) Program plays a critical role in supporting Australia's energy, telecommunications, and resource sectors.

The E&R Lead Meteorologist will be a trusted advisor to the customer, often embedded within their operations. The role is a key focal point for customer engagement and draws on extensive networks across the Bureau to deliver tailored services. The successful candidate will be enthusiastic about delivering an excellent customer experience and requires technical expertise, excellent communication skills and advanced customer engagement skills.

The E&R lead meteorologist involves working with customers across Australia, requiring a strong commitment to national service delivery. This role requires the applicant to be available to work operational shift work with varying rostered shifts including weekends as well as restriction duties. At other times, staff will work dayshifts contributing to E&R projects, support innovation and service development and customer deliverables. Occasional interstate travel may be necessary to support customer engagements, attend meetings, or participate in on-site training and activities.

This is a new position encompassing a variety of seasonally rostered shifts which include:

  • E&R Lead Operational Meteorologist
  • E&R Decision Support Specialist – Energy and Telecommunications
  • E&R Decision Support Specialist – Resources
Lead Operational Meteorologist:

The Lead Operations Meteorologist will lead the operational team to develop forecast policy, collaborating with other E&R meteorologists and across the wider Bureau to ensure the provision of high-quality products and services.

This role will be a leader within the group driving innovation, team culture, mentoring staff and coordinating service delivery.

Decision Support Specialist – Energy and Telecommunications:

The Decision Support Specialist will provide tailored, high-impact weather briefings, bespoke forecast and warning products and advice to support sector customer operations. Primarily collaborating closely with AEMO, NBN and Western Power on a day-to-day basis.

Decision Support Specialist – Resources:

The Decision Support Specialist will provide tailored, high-impact weather briefings and advice to support resources customer operations, principally Woodside, during tropical cyclone season (November to May). Staff based in Perth are required to attend the Woodside office as an embedded decision support meteorologist during impactful weather. Others would complete the role duties remotely from your home state office.

Demonstrated experience in providing decision support services, particularly during tropical cyclones or other high impact weather events is essential for this role. Experience or in-depth knowledge of maritime forecasting, plus the energy, telecommunication and resources sectors is desirable but not essential.
