We are currently looking for a full-time, in-office Family Law and Civil Litigation Paralegal / Legal Assistant. This is a mid-level assistant position. The position would involve working in office, although there may be some limited ability to do some work from home.
The successful applicant should have 3+ years of experience working in family law, civil litigation, or both. Experience with BC Supreme Court family and civil proceedings is preferred. Experience with Provincial Court family matters, chambers applications, trial preparation, and civil litigation would be considered an asset.
Your Role
· Preparing family law and civil litigation pleadings and documents, including Notices of Family Claim, Responses to Family Claim, Counterclaims, Financial Statements, Requisitions, Notices of Application, Application Responses, Affidavits, Orders, Bills of Costs, Notices of Civil Claim, Responses to Civil Claim, Counterclaims, Discovery Demands and related materials
· Assisting lawyers with family law files involving separation, divorce, parenting arrangements, child support, spousal support, property division, agreements and court applications
· Assisting lawyers with civil litigation files, including pleadings, document production, applications, discoveries, mediation and trial preparation
· Communicating with clients, opposing counsel, unrepresented opposing parties, court registries, process servers, experts, accountants, notaries and other professionals
· Organizing documents, evidence, exhibits, briefs, application materials, financial disclosure and trial preparation materials
· Preparing, formatting, filing and serving court documents, including electronic filing where applicable
· Managing a bring-forward system for important dates, limitation dates, court deadlines, filing deadlines, trial dates, application dates, discoveries, mediations and client follow-ups
· Managing calendars and scheduling appointments, client meetings, court applications, discoveries, mediations, judicial case conferences, family management conferences, trials and other matters
· Assisting with opening and closing files
· Assisting lawyers and other staff as needed
· Other tasks as required
Qualifications:
· Legal Administrative Assistant Certificate, Paralegal Certificate or equivalent experience
· 3+ years of experience in a legal assistant or paralegal role, preferably in family law, civil litigation, or both
· Knowledge and understanding of BC Supreme Court Rules, Supreme Court Family Rules, court practices, filing procedures and deadlines
· Experience with Provincial Court family matters would be an asset
· Experience working with Outlook, Microsoft Word, Excel and Clio
· Organized and attentive to detail
· Mature, responsible and reliable
· Ability to manage many files in a fast-paced environment
· Excellent oral and written communication skills
· Ability to multi-task and manage multiple deadlines
· Strong initiative
· Ability to work independently and as part of a team
· Excellent judgment and the ability to exercise discretion when dealing with confidential, sensitive and personal matters
· Friendly, professional and client-service oriented

Pay: $55,000.00-$90,000.00 per year
