Grocery Manager

Position Overview
We are seeking a motivated and experienced Grocery Manager to oversee the day-to-day operations of our Grocery department at our vege & grocery store in Manurewa, Auckland which includes grocery, produce & frozen. The Grocery Manager will be responsible for managing pricing, inventory, leading a team, maintaining store standards, and ensuring that grocery department operates smoothly to deliver excellent customer shopping experience. This role requires strong leadership, organisational skills, and a passion for high-quality customer service.

Key Responsibilities

Purchase:

· Make purchase decisions to ensure that stocks is bought at the most beneficial deals offered by the suppliers apart from the regular suppliers

· Build and strengthen relationships with existing and new suppliers.

· Negotiate prices and payment terms with suppliers.

· Organize and monitor timely delivery of goods ordered.

· Check products on arrival for quality and correct quantities, check the invoice to ensure rebates and discounts are properly reflected prior to signing off and forwarding to owner.

Stock Take and Control:

· Be responsible for monitoring sales and stock position to ensure that orders are placed and deliveries scheduled so as to minimize product waste and write off.

· Assist in ensuring purchase costs are kept within parameters set out by the owners of the business.

· Ensure that perishable stocks are correctly utilized following first in first out inventory rules, so as to minimize wastage.

· Organize, monitor and record delivery for all goods ordered for the store.

Sales and Customer Service:

· Calculate margins and ensure profitability when setting sales prices of new products or promotional offers.

· Ensure new/promotional prices are updated in the till system and then removed once the promo period is over.

· Ensure all items are displayed correctly with pricing on boards and drinks etc are tagged correctly in store. Monitor prompt replacement of tags on older stock if required.

· Ensure that every customer receives fast and friendly service, both when ordering on the telephone and in store.

· Take overall responsibility for managing complaints to the store and discuss with the owner for resolution.

· Ensure staffs are trained to handle complaints for quality, lateness or any other reason for complaints to ensure that the causes are eliminated.

Staff Management:

· Preparing staff rosters.

· Train staff in the store. Ensure that staff comply with expected store behavior and that their time is utilized in the best possible manner.

· Mentor staff to maintain impeccable customer service and health and hygiene standards in store.

Store Marketing and Promotion:

· Formulate regular in store promotions to ensure that the marketing approach of the service station has a direct impact on business growth.

· Assist the owner in ensuring that the marketing activities are carried out in a timely manner and are well executed.

· Make ongoing or temporary changes to the sales prices of existing products as required

Budgeting:

· Assist the owner in achieving cost goals through regular monitoring and recording of costs, effective sales performance and minimizing product waste and write off.

· Manage promotions and initiatives within plan and budget so as to promote store profit.

· Assist in meeting weekly and monthly store targets and proactively take action to remedy any adverse trends.

· Review sales, gross profits, contributions to profit and cost targets with the store owner as appropriate.

Other Duties:

· Personally authorize or delegate any out of ordinary decisions made by staff members in store.

· Ensure appropriate safety equipment is readily available if required by store staff or customers.

· Ensure any health or safety hazards and hygiene routines are being maintained and that all perishables are correctly stored.

Key Skills & Qualifications

  • Either a minimum of two years of work experience in retail or relevant field or a relevant qualification of minimum level 4 is acceptable in case of no experience (overseas equivalent qualification is also acceptable)
  • Strong leadership and people management skills with the ability to motivate and develop a team is a plus
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage inventory, stock levels, and vendor relationships effectively.
  • Knowledge of health and safety regulations and food safety practices.
  • A customer-first mindset with a passion for delivering excellent service.
  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and public holidays as needed.

Job Types: Full-time, Permanent

Pay: $25.00 – $35.00 per hour
