The Position
2025 Summer Intern - Discovery Oncology
Department Summary
Different groups in the Discovery Oncology Department work on identifying critical proteins and pathways important for controlling tumor cell growth and death. In addition we work on establishing potential therapeutics that activate or inhibit these pathways in cancer cells. We also investigate molecular mechanisms which regulate sensitivity and resistance to targeted agents to understand drug response in the context of heterogeneity of cancer cells and patients.
This internship position is located in South San Francisco, onsite
The Opportunity
This lab works on Antibody-Drug Conjugates (ADCs) as a modality of targeted therapy for different types of cancers. We focus mainly on breast cancer and certain hematologic malignancies. We are looking for an individual with strong cell biology and biochemistry skills to participate in one of our ADC programs. The individual will be responsible for:
Maintaining and expanding cell lines for use in in vitro assays
Assessing expression of cell surface targets on cancer cells
Measuring binding of ADCs to specific targets on cancer cells
Testing different ADCs and small molecule compounds in cell proliferation and apoptosis assays
Participating in lab and team meetings to share data
Program Highlights
Intensive 12-week, full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship.
Program start dates are in May/June (Summer)
A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship.
Ownership of challenging and impactful business-critical projects.

Who You Are
Required Education
You meet one of the following criteria:
- Must be pursuing a Bachelor's Degree (enrolled student).
- Must have attained a Bachelor's Degree (not currently enrolled in a graduate program).
- Must be pursuing a Master's Degree (enrolled student).
- Must have attained a Master's Degree.
- Must be pursuing a PhD (enrolled student).
- Must have attained a PhD.
Required Majors: Cell/Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Pharmacology
Required:
Extensive experience in mammalian cell culture (both adherent cells and suspension cells)
Counting cells and plating/seeding cells for experiments in 96-well plates
Assessing proliferation/apoptosis using provided kits
Assessing expression of cell surface proteins by flow cytometry
Proficiency in MS Powerpoint/Word/Excel
Mammalian cell culture: making cell culture medium, maintaining, expanding and freezing down cells
Ability to count cells and set up proliferation/apoptosis assays with different concentrations/dilutions of ADCs, antibodies and small molecule compounds
Ability to measure cell surface proteins by either flow cytometry or immunoblot
Data analysis and graphing
Making Powerpoint presentations of data/project outcomes
Preferred:
Biochemical methods such as western blot
Knowledge of graphics programs such as Prism, Kaleidagraph
Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of STATE is $25-$45 hour. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
