Internship In Finite Element Solver Department (M/F) 80-100%

AutoForm's Finite Element Solver specializes in simulating a wide array of sheet metal forming processes, incorporating both mechanical and thermal effects. Accuracy of the simulation results is strongly linked to the employed material model.

In Finite Elements, the material model is the key connection translating mesh deformation (and the strains calculated thereof), and the internal stress state. Ultimately, the deformation is calculated in a way that the internal stresses are in equilibrium.

Together with ETHZ and Inspire AG, AutoForm is developing material models combining Neural Networks with traditional material models and Finite Element formulations. Aim of this internship is to investigate the quality of the provided stress/strain relation provided by the neural network, derive stiffnesses and test the robustness of these in a full scale sheet metal forming simulation.


Your tasks

  • Collaborate AutoForm’s development team and external partners
  • Investigate neural network performance compared to classical material formulations
  • Work on improving robustness and accuracy on ML-based material model

Your profile

  • Sound knowledge of engineering mechanics and numerical methods
  • Good programming skills in C
  • Strong technical interest, willingness to get involved in complex technical issues
  • Team Player with a strong commitment to problem solving
  • Good knowledge of English required. German would be a plus

This role is based in Zurich. The duration at 100% workload is 4-6 months. The minimum workload is 80%, extending the duration accordingly.
