We are looking for a Assistant Underwriter. You will work within the International Property reinsurance underwriting team, and in accordance with established procedures and guidelines, you will administer and manage new and renewal treaties. You will have an excellent opportunity to gain practical underwriting experience, receive valuable on-the-job training, and obtain a relevant professional qualification in the (re)insurance field to develop and enrich your knowledge of the insurance and reinsurance industry.

You will report to one of our Senior Property Underwriters.


What you’ll be doing

What will your essential responsibilities include?

  • Establish rates for new contracts and renewals by reviewing, evaluating, and analyzing the account information and statistics, and assist the senior underwriter in making the decision to accept or decline a risk.
  • Review and prepare client data and exposure data, provide and structure the necessary information for pricing, peer reviews and referrals to committees to support the underwriting process. Ensure that all information is entered into the respective underwriting, pricing, and data storage systems and is kept up to date and accurate.
  • Analyze the existing reinsurance treaty wordings, and as needed, the underlying insurance policies in order to assess their impact on the risk and profitability of the reinsurance treaties.
  • Process slips and clauses promptly, monitor and assist with accounting operations and claims as well as related services.
  • Support the implementation of business development activities and ad-hoc project work, such as portfolio optimization, identification of key brokers and markets, action plans from marketing activities.
  • Coordinate with other reinsurance offices within International Re and other business units, such as finance, actuarial, segment operations, and claims.
  • Work alongside actuaries to develop your technical skills, enhance your ability to price risks, and understand how exposures are measured at the portfolio level.
  • Support senior underwriters by participating in internal and external meetings with clients/brokers and establishing and maintaining relationships with brokers and clients to maximize underwriting opportunities


What you’ll bring

We’re looking for someone who has these abilities and skills:

Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Academic requirement: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree or equivalent
  • Excellent mathematical skills
  • Fluent command of English; German, French or any additional European language is a plus
  • Excellent working knowledge of Excel and other Microsoft Office programs.
  • Problem-solving oriented and analytical thinker capable of demonstrating adaptability and accuracy, as well as sharp numerical and logical skills, and the ability to make decisions independently using their own judgment.

Desired Skills and Abilities:

  • Effective organizational skills, including effective planning, prioritization, and time management. Able to complete tasks to tight deadlines. Demonstration of a ‘can do’ attitude, even under demanding circumstances
  • Comfortable taking responsibility for their work, identifying the need to act while working effectively within a team.
  • Experience in the reinsurance sector and/or knowledge of insurance is an advantage.
