Job Overview
Immigration Paralegal
Boutique removal defense/family immigration firm based in San Jose seeks to hire a bilingual paralegal fluent in English and Spanish. The position is a full-time position. The duties include preparing asylum, humanitarian and family-based petitions and applications under the supervision of an attorney. In addition, the candidate will assist in preparing motions and other filings with the Immigration Court.
Our mission is to provide compassionate representation and prevent the separation of families. Candidates for the position are expected to share our mission. Applicants who are not fluent in both English and Spanish will not be considered.
Responsibilities
- Assist attorneys with the preparation and filing of family-based immigration petitions (e.g., I-130, I-485, I-751, N-400, etc.);
- Prepare applications for humanitarian relief, such as asylum, U visas, T visas and VAWA petitions;
- Support attorneys in removal defense cases, including preparation of motions, applications for cancellation of removal and asylum applications;
- Conduct legal research related to immigration law and policy;
- Draft and organize supporting documentation, affidavits and legal correspondence;
- Communicate with clients to gather necessary information, provide case updates and explain immigration processes;
- Manage case files and ensure all deadlines are met; and
- Maintain client confidentiality and uphold ethical standards.
Qualifications:
- Experience in Immigration law;
- Fluent in Spanish & English (written and oral);
- Good writing skills;
- Computer literacy;
- Working knowledge of case management software;
- Familiarity with law, legal procedures and protocols and court system;
- Excellent secretarial and organizational skills;
- Ability to juggle multiple activities and work under pressure;
- Commitment to hard work, attention to detail and excellent writing;
- 4-year degree is preferred but not required; and
- Prior experience with removal defense is a plus.
