The Maple Grove Police Department provides a fulfilling career for individuals passionate about public safety and law enforcement. Our patrol officers work 10-hour shifts that enhance both efficiency and work-life balance. We offer a variety of permanent and rotating investigator roles designed to support career advancement. Officers are encouraged to pursue assignments in specialized teams such as the Safe Streets Unit (plain-clothes proactive enforcement), Traffic Unit, Emergency Response Unit, Crisis Negotiations Team, Public Order Unit, and K-9 Unit. Our department emphasizes professional development through a comprehensive Field Training Officer (FTO) and mentorship program. As the operators of the North Metro Regional Public Safety Training Facility, we provide access to modern indoor and outdoor training environments featuring the latest scenario-based and reality-based instruction. This commitment ensures our officers are well-prepared, confident, and continuously growing throughout their careers.

Responsibilities
- Coordinates efforts to ensure the City of Maple Grove is an equitable, inclusive, and respectful organization and supports the City’s mission, vision, and core values.
- Demonstrates ability to understand and respect the diversity of customers and co-workers, effectively communicating with individuals whose first language may be one other than English.
- Works on rotating shifts performing security patrols in assigned area, handles traffic control, investigation and first aid at accidents; detection, investigation and arrest of persons involved in crimes or misconduct.
- Carries out duties in conformance with Federal, State, County and City laws and ordinances.
- Works an assigned shift using own judgment in deciding course of action, being expected to handle difficult and emergency situations without assistance.
- Prepares a variety of reports and records, including calls for service, crimes criminal investigations, vehicle crashes, suspicious incidents, radar and LIDAR logs, and various other written reports.
- Patrols City streets, parks, commercial and residential areas to preserve the peace and enforce the law, control vehicular traffic, prevent or detect and investigate misconduct involving misdemeanors, felonies and other law violations.
- Responds to emergency radio calls and investigates accidents, robberies, civil disturbances, domestic disputes, fights, drunkenness, missing children, prowlers, abuse of drugs, etc. Takes appropriate law enforcement action.
- Undertakes community oriented and problem solving policing work with the aid of data-driven systems. Answers questions from the public on phone or in person such as project status, complaints, law interpretation, or refers to proper agency.
- Faces situations and is prepared to use deadly force when justified.
- Requests checks on car registrations, warrants, firearms, and issues tickets, citation or tags for illegal violations.
- Monitors crime areas, makes business checks or vacation checks of private dwellings.
- Completes routine, non-emergency reports through preliminary investigations and reports, which include: interviewing suspects, witnesses, citizens, victims, specialists, and other individuals as necessary. Takes written and oral statements from victims, witnesses, and suspects. Develops leads and tips. Searches scene of crimes for physical evidence. Preserves and processes evidence. Analyzes and evaluates evidence and arrests offenders. Prepares cases for giving testimony and testifies in court proceedings.
- Interrogates suspects and takes sworn statements, formal confessions or depositions; testifies at trials, hearings or grand juries.
- Coordinates activities with other officers or other City departments as needed, exchanges information with officers in other law enforcement agencies and obtains advice from the City Attorney, Court Administrator, and Municipal Prosecutor’s Office regarding cases, policies and procedures, as needed and assigned.
- Conducts field training.
- Maintains skills proficiency.
- Performs other related duties or specialty assignments as apparent or assigned.
Knowledge of:
- Principles, procedures, techniques and equipment of modern law enforcement.
- Local geography.
- Operation of investigative tools and equipment.
- Understand and interpret the applicable laws, ordinances and department rules and regulations.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Establish and maintain positive and effective working relationship with those contacted in the course of work.
- Treat public tactfully, with courtesy, or , when the occasion demands it, with firmness.
- Exercise sound judgement in evaluating situations and in making decisions.
- Understand and carry out complex directions.
- Learn the City’s geography.
- Skillfully operate firearms.
- Withstand adverse weather conditions.
- Pass a psychological evaluation, background check, pre-employment physical, to include a drug screen, necessary to successfully perform job.
Qualifications
An equivalent combination of education and experience closely related to the duties of the position MAY be considered.
Need to have:
- Associate’s degree in criminal justice or related field.
- Ability to be licensed under the P.O.S.T. selection standards.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain an appropriate valid Minnesota Driver’s License.
Nice to have:
- Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or related field
- Experience as a law enforcement officer
