Use your technical skills and interest in finance to help modernize how a major institutional investor produces and manages risk data. The British Columbia Investment Management Corporation (BCI) is currently seeking a Risk Reporting & Data co-op student/intern for the fall term (September to December) to support the rollout of our new client reporting platform and help build internal tools that improve data transparency across the Investment Risk team.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
BCI manages a globally diversified portfolio of assets valued at $295.0 billion and is one of Canada’s largest institutional investors. We invest globally to support pension and other funds for more than 30 clients based in British Columbia. We are proud to have been chosen as one of Canada’s Top 100 Employers and BC’s Top Employers. These national and provincial competitions recognize employers who offer exceptional workplaces for their employees.
The Risk Reporting & Data co-op/intern will work within our Investment Strategy & Risk department, reporting to the A/Principal, Risk Reporting & Data. This is a great opportunity for you to apply your technical skills to real-world problems at the intersection of finance and technology — supporting the launch of a new client reporting tool and helping build internal applications that improve how the risk team manages and understands its data.
WHO YOU WILL WORK WITH
The Investment Strategy & Risk department plays a key role in setting, implementing, and monitoring the long-term strategies of BCI’s clients. This is accomplished by working with clients, management and asset classes to define the optimal path to achieve clients’ outcomes and enabling BCI’s investment structures and processes necessary to fulfill these outcomes. ISR consists of five branches: Strategic Asset Allocation, Total Fund Management, Growth & Investment Solutions, Client Partnerships and Investment Risk.
Strategic Asset Allocation assists clients with developing tailored investment policies that achieve investment objectives consistent with their investment philosophies, funding policies and risk tolerances. This team also conducts research and models relevant macroeconomic issues including assessment of the current business cycle dynamics and research of emerging economic or financial trends, opportunities and risks – all at an asset class and total fund level.
Total Fund Management is responsible for implementing a suite of total portfolio solutions such as rebalancing and for setting pool, asset class and total fund measures of success including benchmarks and performance objectives.
Growth & Investment Solutions is responsible for stewarding BCI’s growth ambition, with an overarching goal of delivering net benefits to BCI’s existing clients. This includes efforts to support BCI’s clients in their own growth, developing new client relationships, and delivering new investment partnerships.
Client Partnerships leads client relationships, engagement, and the sharing of information and insights to deepen client satisfaction. The team works closely with clients to understand their needs and expectations, and with the BCI team to ensure we deliver value and meet client investment objectives. This includes regular, proactive communications, tailored client services, and a commitment to transparency to ensure BCI remains clients' trusted investment manager of choice.
Investment Risk focuses on the measurement and management of the asset class, total portfolio, and client investment risks. This team also advises clients on appropriate investment strategies based on their risks and tolerances for those risks.
WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING
Your time will be split across two priorities.
Client Reporting Tool Overhaul (~70%):
Support parallel testing between the legacy client reporting system and the new in-house platform, helping identify, investigate, and resolve discrepancies during the validation period
Assist with implementing modifications and enhancements in the new application based on internal and external feedback, in preparation for production launch
Support additional development, testing, or project-related work as priorities evolve through go-live
Internal Data Catalog & Lineage Tool Development (up to 30%, as capacity allows):
Help build an internal application that maps relationships between the Investment Risk team's major data tables and views, with embedded business definitions
Enable end users to trace any field back to its source, look up definitions independently, discover reusable tables, and understand the impact of upstream changes
Use AI-assisted development tools alongside Python, SQL to design and iterate on the application
Other ad-hoc projects and tasks as assigned by the team
REQUIRED SKILLS
Working toward a degree in computer science, software engineering, data science, or a related technical discipline, combined with knowledge of or strong interest in finance and investment management
Experience using AI coding assistants to support application development and system design
Proficiency in Python, SQL, and Git
Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
Ability to meet deadlines while maintaining accuracy, attention to detail, and excellent product quality
Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities; comfortable investigating data discrepancies and tracing issues to root cause
Familiarity with data lineage concepts, ETL/data pipelines, or financial reporting systems would be an asset
