Senior Project Accountant
Position Summary
The Senior Project Accountant is responsible for overseeing project accounting functions with a strong focus on purchase orders, accounts payable, and financial reporting. This role partners closely with project managers, operations leadership, vendors, and finance teams to ensure accurate financial reporting, timely payment processing, budget monitoring, and compliance with company policies and contractual requirements. The Senior Project Accountant will also provide guidance on and support process improvements within procurement and project cost reporting.
Key Responsibilities
- Handle full-cycle accounts payable activities for multiple projects, including invoice review, coding, approvals, payment processing, three-way match with purchase orders and receipts, and vendor reconciliations.
- Handle full-cycle accounts payable activities for general and overhead company costs, including invoice review, coding, approvals, payment processing, and vendor reconciliations.
- Handle all expense reporting for company credit cards and employee reimbursements where applicable.
- Ensure accurate allocation of project costs, subcontractor expenses, retainage, accruals, and general ledger coding.
- Collaborate with the project managers to develop, prepare, and analyze monthly project financial statements, budget-to-actual reports, forecasts, and variance analyses where applicable.
- Monitor project financial performance, cash flow, commitments, and outstanding liabilities.
- Support month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes, including journal entries, reconciliations, and financial reporting.
- Review contracts, purchase orders, and subcontract agreements to ensure financial compliance and proper accounting treatment.
- Collaborate with project managers and operational leadership to identify financial risks, cost overruns, and opportunities for improved project performance where applicable.
- Manage vendor relationships and resolve invoice discrepancies, payment issues, and account inquiries.
- Prepare audit schedules, supporting documentation, and compliance reporting for internal and external audits.
- Guide and support development and implementation of accounting controls, procedures, and process improvements.
- Ensure compliance with company policies, GAAP standards, and industry-specific accounting requirements.
- Prepare and analyze proper work-in-process project-related financial information.
- Maintain organized and accurate financial records for all assigned projects.
- Assist with creation and maintenance of project/department/company budgets and associated financial reporting.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including project accounting and accounts payable responsibilities.
- Strong experience in construction, engineering, manufacturing, or other project-based industries preferred.
- Advanced knowledge of project accounting principles, financial reporting, accrual accounting, and job costing.
- Experience with WIP reporting, subcontractor accounting, and retainage management.
- Experience managing high-volume accounts payable processes and vendor relationships.
- Proficiency with ERP/accounting systems such as Sage 300 CRE, Great Plains, or other similar platforms.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including financial analysis and reporting.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to interact effectively across departments and leadership levels.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Work Environment
- On-site work environment.
- Part-time flexible work hours estimated at 16 – 40 hours per week. This will be further discussed during the interview process- we are looking for the right person and can be flexible on part-time or full-time employment. Full-time employment would of course be a salaried position.
- Ability to meet strict deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Compensation
· Compensation will be based on experience and qualifications.
Pay: $30.00 - $50.00 per hour
