About The opportunity | Ko te āheinga:

At Hawke’s Bay Regional Council our purpose is to work with our community to protect and manage the region’s precious taonga of rivers, lakes, soils, air, coast and biodiversity for health, wellbeing and connectivity.

In short, the reason that we exist is to protect and enhance our natural environment for the future. We have a very diverse range of professions here at Council, ranging from scientists, engineers, corporate people, regional parks staff, the Harbourmaster, data and environmental scientists, and GIS analysts to name a few! We currently have approximately 360 employees and offices across the region through to Mahia.

This summer, Hawke’s Bay Regional Council is offering a three-month paid Internship Programme to students who are studying towards a formal qualification that directly relates to the work we do here. This placement runs from November to February (don’t worry, we can work the dates around your exams!) and will provide you with interesting, paid, full-time work as well as career development while you study. This opportunity to work and learn in the field is hugely valuable to your growth as a student and future employee. We are open to students are all stages of their studies, and often end up bringing on a few of our student as permanent employees each year after their graduation!

We are looking for enthusiastic students who are well-organised, show high levels of initiative and have the ability to work independently or with a team when required. If you have a passion for the environment that is a bonus. We have vacancies across several of our core functions and are looking for students interested in the following areas:

• Environmental Science

• Engineering

• Landscape Design

• Planning

• Resource Management

• Water Quality and Ecology

We are open to other disciplines too, just tell us how it relates to the work HBRC does and we will consider your application.

Requirements for the programme:

• You will have completed or be studying towards a formal qualification in a relevant field.

• If you are interested to work in the Water, Quality and Ecology team you need to be confident working in and around waterways and undertaking long days of solo driving and fieldwork.

• A current driver’s licence is essential and competency driving a manual transmission vehicle is required for some roles.

What we offer | Nga huanga mōu:

The hourly rate for our students is $25.00, plus 8% pay as you go for your annual leave entitlement.

HBRC also has a strong commitment to developing and upskilling people within a flexible and supportive working environment. You will need to have current working rights in New Zealand to be considered for these placements.

You will also need to be based in the Hawke’s Bay for the summer period while undertaking the programme so please bear this in mind when applying.
