Think Tank Project Manager
Overview:

Medici Senza Frontiere (MSF) Italy intends to launch a structured and independent reflection on humanitarian knowledge and global health, examining the main ethical, operational, and political dilemmas that characterize contemporary humanitarian action.


Within this framework, MSF Italy is establishing a Think Tank connected to the international network of research and critical reflection centers within the MSF movement. The Think Tank aims to contribute to the development of an informed and rigorous debate on humanitarian practice and global health governance in Italy, building on MSF’s operational experience and promoting critical discussion in line with the Organization’s values, principles, and strategic priorities.


The Think Tank may also operate in collaboration with Italian and international academic institutions, research centers, and other relevant stakeholders, with the objective of strengthening analysis, knowledge production, and the impact of public and political debate on humanitarian and global health issues.

Responsibilities:
The Think Tank Project Manager is responsible for the establishment and operational coordination of MSF Italy’s humanitarian Think Tank, ensuring its implementation in alignment with the Organization’s strategic direction and contributing to the definition of research and analysis programs.
Under the supervision of the Head of Unit (Head of Humanitarian Affairs – HA) and working in collaboration with other relevant departments, the Think Tank Project Manager contributes to the production of analyses, proposals, and content aimed at supporting the Organization’s positioning in public and political debate, ensuring consistency with MSF Italy’s values, strategic priorities, and operational guidelines.

Establishment and Launch of the Think Tank

  • In coordination with the Head of Humanitarian Affairs Unit, responsible for the implementation of the Think Tank’s identity and positioning, in line with MSF’s values and strategic priorities;
  • Develop an operational and analytical plan for the launch of the Think Tank, based on the results of the feasibility study;
  • Consolidation of the Think Tank’s operational and governance model.

Planning and Development of Activities

  • In coordination with the strategic direction defined by the Programs Department and the HA Unit, initiate and develop the program of activities and research, proposing themes, methodological approaches, and expected outputs;
  • Define and implement a medium-term operational roadmap for the production of analyses, publications, and debate initiatives aligned with the Organization’s strategic priorities;
  • Test and propose formats and communication tools (reports, policy briefs, op-eds, events, seminars) for disseminating results.

Content Production and Coordination

  • Produce analytical and policy documents by translating operational evidence and field data into analyses useful for policy-making and for supporting the Organization’s positioning at the national level;
  • Coordinate and facilitate the work of researchers, analysts, consultants, and internal and external experts, in collaboration with the Head of the Humanitarian Affairs Unit;
  • In coordination with the Head of Humanitarian Affairs Unit, define and consolidate relationships with academic institutions, research centers, and national and international thematic networks, fostering dialogue between MSF’s operational experience, academic research, and policy analysis.
Qualifications:

Key requirements:

  • PhD in Humanitarian Studies, International Relations, Law, Sociology, Global Health, or related disciplines.
  • At least 5 years of experience in academic and scientific research or within think tanks, with proven experience in coordinating research projects (including international ones), working groups, or interdisciplinary initiatives.
  • In-depth knowledge of humanitarian issues, institutional dynamics, and international policies.
  • Strong network established within the international cooperation and/or humanitarian aid studies.
  • Excellent analytical, writing, synthesis, and ability to translate complex content into clear and effective messages.
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate effectively within a team to achieve objectives.
  • Enthusiasm, proactivity, and the ability to manage priorities and deadlines efficiently.
  • Italian fluent C2, English fluent C1.

  • Strong motivation and alignment with humanitarian values.

Added value:

  • Experience in the humanitarian sector involving the production of analytical reports, policy briefs, and engagement in advocacy activities is considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of additional languages will be considered an asset.

Positions details
Contract: Fixed term, December 2026. Level I of Italian CCNL of Commerce.
Gross Annual Salary: Min. 37.444 – Max. 45.309 (depending on experience of the selected candidate).
Starting date: April 2026.
