Job description

Applied Ecology, Inc., an environmental and engineering consulting business with a rapidly expanding footprint, is seeking a highly motivated and energetic experienced Utility Locate Technician to join our growing team. AEI has three offices located in Florida and is a regional leader in geospatial services, water resources, natural resources, and environmental remediation and contamination services. This position will serve our Tampa area clients and is field based.

Applied Ecology is seeking an experienced candidate for this position (2 years of experience minimum). A Utility Locator identifies, locates, and marks the location of 811 subsurface utilities in order to minimize accidental damage or disruption of service due to construction excavation activities. An employee in this class performs a variety of skilled and semiskilled activities to facilitate safe excavation. These activities include locating and marking existing City-owned underground infrastructure focusing on the water lines. Must be able to maintain appropriate customer relations when approached by general public.

As the Utility Locator usually works alone, an employee in this class is expected to exercise considerable initiative in moving efficiently through the day's work assignments. Also, considerable independent judgment must be used, as the accuracy of the locate depends heavily upon how well the readings from the equipment are interpreted. An employee in this class must also be able to read and interpret the electronic quarter section and plat maps to facilitate locating utility lines. The major objectives are quality, accuracy, thoroughness, and ability to follow instructions.

The position is contingent on being able to pass a background check and possessing valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.

POSITION DESCRIPTION: RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES

  • Operates various electronic devices designed to assist in the locating of subsurface utilities
  • Read and interpret utility records, as built and survey drawings and highway design plans
  • Distinguishes colors to mark utilities with the designated color for the corresponding utility. Uses common hand tools such as a hammer or screwdriver to open various utility appurtenances enabling direct attachment of locating equipment
  • Prepares various clear and concise written reports and forms including vehicle mileage reports, daily time sheets, work completed documents, etc.
  • Interacts effectively with contractors, coworkers, and the general public to establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • Operates a motor vehicle (example: pickup truck) requiring a standard Florida Driver's License to complete locating assignments and to respond to emergencies
  • Operates a laptop PC in order to obtain information regarding excavation locations and to input status of work performed
  • Prepares or updates maps to make corrections for specific plats
  • Works with paints using normal protective equipment to mark utility lines
  • Sets up or removes traffic cones to facilitate the marking of utilities located in the road
  • Works in a variety of hazardous environments such as construction sites and traffic rights-of-way while performing locate assignments
  • Able to create legible field sketches, simple mathematics, and basic field measurements
  • Perform other duties as assigned

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in utility locating (minimum 2 years)
  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds and walk for long periods of time through different types of terrain, work in all weather conditions
  • Willing to learn, process oriented, team player, and ability to work independently
  • Previous extensive outdoor experience
  • Pre-employment drug screening, background and motor vehicle checks are required

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Associate’s degree preferred
  • >4 years of similar experience to be considered for a Technician III
  • Current Commercial Driver’s License is a plus
  • Experience training junior technicians
  • OSHA Certifications
  • Willing to work infrequent overtime when requested

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $20.00 - $25.00 per hour
