Job Description
SANCCOB is a leading seabird conservation non-profit organisation which seeks to employ a full time Volunteer and Intern Coordinator to join their energetic and dedicated team based in Cape Town. The successful candidate will have a dual report to the Rehabilitation and the Education and Skills Development Managers.
The Volunteer and Intern Coordinator will be responsible for recruiting and retaining volunteers and interns to take part in SANCCOB’s various programmes; l the portfolio will also include the following key performance areas:
- Market and develop SANCCOB’s volunteer, internship, and skills development programmes against pre-determined financial targets.
- Ensure successful stewardship of current stakeholder relationships, and develop new partnerships, to expand SANCCOB’s volunteer, intern, and skills development programmes.
- Recruit sufficient volunteer and intern capacity throughout the year.
- Oversee skills development and skills transfer initiatives, to ensure an effective flow of volunteers and interns to meet capacity requirements.
- Ensure that the volunteer and intern recruitment process is effective to meet set quotas.
- Monthly capacity scheduling and rostering.
- Coordinate all aspects of the volunteer and internship programmes, including day-to-day management of volunteers and interns.
- Coordinate orientation sessions and training sessions to provide volunteers and interns with knowledge and skills to contribute in a meaningful way during their time at SANCCOB.
- Offer advice, information and support to volunteers and interns, and external organisations, through face-to-face, telephone and e-mail contact.
- Prepare surveys to evaluate the programmes and provide reference letters and appreciation certificates.
- Organise and host open days and monthly social events.
- Maintain databases and all other administrative duties related to volunteers and interns.
- Manage the volunteer and internship budget effectively.
- Build relationships with current and new volunteers, ensuring they feel appreciated.
- Act as the contact person for internship programmes through which SANCCOB acts as a host institution and be responsible for all communication and reporting.
- Comply and enforce Health and Safety regulations and procedures – remain informed of SANCCOB’s latest Health and Safety regulations, taking all reasonable measures to protect your own health and safety, as well as that of others who may be affected by your acts or omissions.
- Facilitate internship training plans and mentor meetings between SANCCOB assigned mentors to ensure a structured internship programme.
- Coordinate all volunteers and interns during crises situations, including oil spills or any other incident response.
- Commit to one morning each week in the Rehabilitation Department, actively working with seabirds.
- After-hours on-call duty, on a rotational basis to respond to any urgent queries or messages received from volunteers.

Experience and qualifications:
- Proven experience in people management/coordination essential.
- Prior experience in the conservation sector, and knowledge of the volunteer (local and/or international) industry will be an advantage.
- Advanced computer skills (Microsoft Office Suite).
- High school diploma (a tertiary qualification in human resources and/or people management related fields will be an advantage).
- Clear criminal and credit record.
- South African citizen.
- Valid Code 8 driver’s license.
